1. PhD Programs in Stabilization of gas-liquid foams using amphiphobic catalysts
Summary of PhD Positions:
Plastics are an essential part of modern society. Unfortunately, only a small fraction of these materials is recycled (9%) the rest are incinerated (12%) and released to the environment (79%). While conventional recycling can be increased, the inferior properties of the recycled materials, relative to virgin plastics, hinders economic profitability. In this project we will tackle this issue by developing new materials and processes that can chemically “upcycle” plastics into added value products in foams stabilized by catalysts.
In this project, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) as part of the Talent Scheme VIDI, you will apply amphiphobic catalysts that can stabilize gas-liquid interfaces to study the formation of foams and their fluid dynamic behavior using high-speed thermal microscopy on micro-channel flow-reactors coupled to ex-situ analytics using HPLC and GC-MS. In this project you will design, construct, and test a new micro-channel reactor system that can generate foams stabilized by particles.

6. PhD Programs in Cloud Security
Summary of PhD Positions:
Real-time monitoring is essential for threat detection and response. Many different security monitoring and intrusion detection approaches have been proposed in the state-of-the-art and several tools are available on the market. However, the complexity and dynamism of modern cloud-based distributed environments (e.g., Kubernetes clusters) pose a critical challenge to such tools, which are limited in terms of scalability and visibility and do not allow for prompt detection of cyberattacks. Additionally, in such distributed architectures it is crucial to correlate insights (e.g., indicators of compromise) observed in multiple nodes to track lateral movement, which existing approaches cannot effectively do.ssss

9. PhD Programs in data science to improve soil biodiversity and sustainability
Summary of PhD Positions:
Current agricultural practices ignore the role of soil biodiversity. The result is low biodiversity, the emission of greenhouse gases, and no buffer against extreme climate events such as drought. Restoring these crucial soil functions will have real impact, and needs modern data science. In 2023, we start the SoilProS project (Soil Biodiversity analyses for Sustainable Production Systems) financed by the Dutch Research Council NWO-TTW (Perspectief programme). The ecological data is collected at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW), a top research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. In the SoilProS project, 7 PhD candidates and one Postdoc will bring together ecology and data science. You are one of these PhD candidates, based at the University of Twente (UT), and solely focused on computational methods for data analysis, modelling and understanding the soil ecosystem.

10. PhD Programs in Radio Systems
Summary of PhD Positions:
The group of Radio Systems (RS) within the University of Twente (UT) has a vacancy for a PhD with the aim to define a novel framework for joint communication and sensing at millimeter-wave (and sub-THz) frequencies. With the advancement of millimeter-wave and sub-THz communications, radio devices with a large bandwidth, a larger number of antenna array elements and beamforming are also suitable for high accuracy localization and sensing. Integrating high resolution radar sensing to high-speed communication systems could make the wireless connectivity more reliable (e.g., blockage prevention); telecommunication infrastructure that is capable of multi-task sensing (e.g., environment mapping, detection, localization and tracking, pose recognition, vital sign estimation) could also enable vertical services like remote health monitoring and autonomous driving. With the next generation joint communication and sensing (JCAS) systems, both the communication and sensing performances are expected to increase.

12. PhD Programs in chemical and physical processes during EUV exposure
Summary of PhD Positions:
Are you interested in research on free-standing thin films of only few tens of nanometer thickness involving EUV experiments at a synchrotron? Ultra-thin, transparent free-standing membranes are used as protective windows (‘pellicles’) in EUV photolithography, to protect EUV masks from contamination. The membranes need to resist not only thermo-mechanical stresses, but also surface degradation by EUV photon induced chemical reactions, bombardment by low energetic ions, and chemical etching by radicals. We are looking for a motivated and skilled researcher to investigate physical and chemical modifications of ultra-thin membranes. The aim of the project is to develop fundamental knowledge on the EUV-induced degradation mechanisms of thin films and find materials and processes to mitigate pellicle damage.

13. PhD Programs in nano/multi-scale simulations of surfactants near interfaces/surfaces
Summary of PhD Positions:
Surfactants are amphiphilic molecules, consisting of a hydrophobic tail and a hydrophilic head group. This duality makes them surface-active and allows them to alter the interfacial properties of fluids. Surfactants play an important role in optimizing printing processes. The adsorption of surfactants at the interface/surface controls the wetting and spreading behavior of ink droplets on paper. The transport and redistribution of surfactants within the ink droplet generates tangential Marangoni stresses and non-uniform capillary forces, which affect the flow of ink on and into porous paper. Yet, the details of the underlying physics and chemistry at different scales (in time and length) are still poorly understood.

You will set up and coordinate experiments performed at the Translational Neuroscience Unit of the Donders Institute in Nijmegen to study fundamental aspects of motor and cognitive behaviour related to Parkinson’s disease and the effects of cueing in mice. One of the objectives of the project is to determine which cueing modalities have the best effect in preventing or overcoming gait impairments under specific environmental conditions and/or increased mental load or dual tasking.

15. PhD Programs in Verification of Efficient and Secure Parallel Algorithms
Summary of PhD Positions:
Are you interested in Theorem Proving? And want to use your skills to make software more secure? Then this position may be for you! To fully exploit the potential of modern hardware, parallel algorithms are required. However, these are also prone to new types of hard-to-find bugs, like data races. In critical software, these frequently cause costly incidents or open the door for hackers. In this project you will apply a theorem prover to show the correctness of parallel software. The challenge is two-fold: first, theoretical models of concurrency have to be formalized in the theorem prover, and, second, techniques to scale them to real software have to be explored.
