4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Therapeutic Stress and Regulation of DNA Methylation in Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

Summary of PhD Program:

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a devastating disease that claims 1000 Australian lives annually. Although standard chemotherapies can achieve remission in about 2/3 of patients, only about 1/4 of patients survive more than 5 years after their diagnosis. The poor prognosis for AML is due to disease relapse, which occurs in most patients and frequently within 2 years of achieving remission. To prevent relapse, we need a greater understanding of the adaptive processes that allow AML cells to evade treatment, as well as new strategies to target these mechanisms.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in stroke survivors

Summary of PhD Program:

Recovery for stroke survivors and their carer/s is a lifelong process that requires ongoing engagement in therapeutic rehabilitation. The ESTEEM Program is a community-based program, developed in collaboration with stroke survivors, their carers, and health professionals. It builds on evidence that suggests environmental enrichment via social interactions with peers, group exercise, and creative thinking (e.g. visual arts or dancing) can improve a stroke survivor’s recovery and quality of life. Given the limited access to stroke recovery programs in regional areas, the ESTEEM Project team and its partners are currently working with 3 regionally-based non-government community-based care-providers across NSW to localise, implement and then evaluate the feasibility and sustainability of the ESTEEM Program.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Valorised Food Applications of Oatmilk Byproducts

Summary of PhD Program:

Improved utilisation of waste or low-value by-product streams represents one important in tackling the compounding problems of food waste. In recent years there has been a marked shift in consumer preferences away from traditional dairy products towards plant-based alternatives. Indeed, the use of soybeans in the production of non-dairy alternatives including soy-milk and tofu is widespread in Asian countries. Okara is the bean pulp filtered as a slurry byproduct generated in the manufacture of soymilk and tofu. For every kg of dry soybeans used in the manufacture of these products, the okara byproduct constitutes 340 grams (dry weight).

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Relationship between Grip Strength

Summary of PhD Program:

Muscular strength is an important and frequently overlooked health variable, with low muscular strength predicting the onset of non-communicable disease in middle age and mortality risk in the elderly. Muscular strength increases throughout the first three decades of life, before declining with advancing age. This is particularly important in Asian populations were low muscular strength (frailty) is prevalent in the elderly, particularly those with type 2 diabetes. Muscular strength predicted by muscle mass, genomic factors and dietary protein intake, however few studies have provided comprehensive insights into each of these variables across the life-course.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ultrafine Particle Deposition

Summary of PhD Program:

Both flotation and oil agglomeration possess major disadvantages especially regarding the size of the particles that are able to be captured. Small particles trend to follow the fluid streamlines and they are deviated from both bubbles and droplets. In these cases, in order to be able to capture ultrafine particles, the hydrophobic force needs to be strong enough to overcome the hydrodynamic resistance force and, possibly, the presence of an electrical double layer repulsion.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Smooth Particle Hydrodynamic Modelling of Moisture Migration under Oscillatory Type Motions

Summary of PhD Program:

The inherent moisture within the mined particulates is not static during material storage, transportation and handling. Moisture is constantly migrating under the influence of the external motions. This is particularly evident for product conveyors, trucks, trains and ships carrying the mined particulates. In this research, numerical modelling will be developed in parallel with the development of unique characterisation techniques. This will be achieved through combining smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) approach which defines the liquid phase with discrete element modelling (DEM) simulations which define the particulate volumes. Subsequent innovative dewatering solutions will be derived from advancing moisture migration knowledge.
