3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing AI to identify normal and pathological periprosthetic osteoblastic activity for total knee arthroplasty
Summary of PhD Program:
Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT-CT) imaging combines functional and anatomical data, enhancing diagnostics but remains underutilized and provides non-specific diagnosis. SPECT-CT’s clinical value in assessing painful knee replacements (TKRs) includes accurate 3D analysis of component positioning and tracer uptake. However, there is limited differentiation between expected and pathological radiopharmaceutical uptake equivocal results in many cases.

Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD is located within a wider project examining the mechanisms driving the reduction of repetitive negative thought via cognitive-behaviour therapy. This large-scale flagship research project seeks to understand the active ingredients of cognitive-behavioural therapies that reduce worry and rumination, to optimise transdiagnostic interventions to prevent and treat common mental health disorders. The project will integrate experimental psychopathology approaches, close engagement with experts-by-experience/lived experience and a definitive international factorial treatment trial. The project involves collaboration between the University of Exeter, University of California Los Angeles, and LMU Munich.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exploring cardiovascular genetics in mid versus later life to improve understanding of biological mechanisms and clinical risk prediction
Summary of PhD Program:
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the UK increases in prevalence from 5% in middle age to over 20% in people aged 75+. Age affects many clinical features as well as the impact of these risk factors on CVD and resulting outcomes. Patient management is also complicated by increasing multimorbidity and polypharmacy as people age. When searching for genetic determinants of CVD risk, previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) predominantly focus on mid-life participants and simply adjust for age. However, it is known that risk varies with age, and subsets of individuals with higher genetic susceptibility have substantially greater disease risk.
Application Deadline: 3rd December 2024
