2. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Outdoor experience in the age of digitalization

Summary of PhD Program:

The two PhD positions are offered within the interdisciplinary project “Outdoor experience in the age of digitalization” which contributes to University of Bern’s “People in Digital Transformation” strategic focus. The overall research aim is to understand how digital tools mediate outdoor movement activities like hiking and mountain running in ordinary and virtual reality.

(1) The first PhD project focuses on outdoor movement activities in ordinary reality and how the use of digital technology and in particular self-tracking devices mediates these experiences. In particular, it will be investigated whether the engagement with these technologies have implications for the embodied experiences and meaningfulness of these activities and if so, in what way. It is expected that both philosophical approaches and qualitative research will be used. The project will be based at the Institute of Sport Science, and the student is expected to have a Master’s degree either in sport science or in philosophy.

(2) The second PhD project focuses on the use of virtual reality technology. The project aims to understand how embodied experiences differ in virtual and ordinary reality, and how valuable virtual outdoor experiences are for a good life. The project will be based at the Institute of Philosophy and it is expected that the applicant has a Master’s degree in philosophy.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Regional Climate Modelling

Summary of PhD Program:

The project MITRAS aims to enhance our understanding of the causes and patterns of climatic changes and their influence on the environment in Southwestern (SW) Asia, using a dense network of different paleo records of the project partners and climate model simulations. In doing so, regional climate modelling is key to assess the complex climate in SW Asia, in particular the hydroclimate. The PhD candidate will be responsible for the dynamical downscaling of global climate conditions of hydrological relevant extreme events during the past 3500 years over SW Asia.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in quantifying the pan-Arctic nitrogen feedback

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project aims to synthesize over novel datasets and simulations covering the pan-Arctic region in order to assess impacts of release of nitrogen from the permafrost for vegetation growth, N2O emissions and lateral exports to freshwaters. Through their research, the PhD candidate will also contribute to developing model frameworks representing mechanisms and timescales of adaptation of the pan-Arctic vegetation to increasing thaw depths and co-current increasing nitrogen availability. During these tasks, the PhD Candidate will be in close exchange and supported by international model development teams of the QUINCY-ICON-L and LPX-Bern terrestrial biosphere models. Planned outcomes are of high relevance for global assessments of climate change, and scientific exchange with international partners investigating downstream impacts of changes of nitrogen exports to freshwaters is planned.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in computational or mathematical biology

Summary of PhD Program:

There is a resurgence of interest in chromosomal inversions within evolutionary biology. This renewed interest in chromosomal inversions is in part driven by the advance of novel technologies that allow us to detect and study inversions in unprecedented detail. However, despite this plethora of new data, we still know very little about how and why inversions evolve. We do know, however, that modifications in genome structure, such as chromosomal inversions, can create genomic landscapes that either facilitate or obstruct adaptation. We seek a PhD student to work with us and increase our understanding of this dynamic interplay between genome structure and natural selection.

9. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in hailstorms

Summary of PhD Program:

The Mobiliar Lab for Natural Risks is a joint research initiative between the University of Bern’s Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research and La Mobilière. The main focuses of its research are hail, flooding and storms, the processes involved in each of these phenomena and the damage each one causes. The Mobiliar Lab’s work lies at the crossroads between theory and practice, intending to achieve results that will benefit the public. The research project aims to combine indirect hail information from radar, light-ning data, hail reports from the public and data from hail sensors to create a posteriori hail footprint maps and to visualize the results so that they are interpretable for stakeholders.
