1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Project management for sustainable health care environments
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a PhD candidate with a passion for sustainability and eagerness to develop deeper understanding of how practice can continue to implement sustainability in complex building construction projects. Our focus is on how hospitals in Norway can move in a more sustainable direction when financial resources are restricted and implement changes that ensure that built health care environments contribute to a sustainable, circular and regenerative world. Relevant themes for this PhD candidate include decision-making, users’ needs, innovation, organisational learning and the like.
Application Deadline: 2nd September 2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Humanities, Language Education and Artificial Intelligence
Summary of PhD Program:
Although AI has the potential to be a tool in climate modeling and remediation efforts, its extractive resource and supply chain costs, e-waste pathways, and carbon footprint actively contribute to pollution and global warming. This project examines how language education can be a site of critical information literacy around environmental climate research and the cost/benefits of AI technologies. The “Climate Change, Language Education, and AI” project explores how AI ed-tech (e.g., text-to-image generators DALL-E/MidJourney) influences students’ epistemic beliefs about environmental climate research and (mis)information in English in the school while also investigating the pedagogical potential of current trends in AI-climate-related natural sciences and humanities projects (e.g., biodiversity monitoring, pollution detection, AI in eco-literature, etc.).

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in social anthropology
Summary of PhD Program:
The project may explore issues such as how people understand the role peatlands play in a sustainable future; what it means to restore peatland landscapes in a time of increasing pressure, degradation, and collapse; how people practically involve themselves with peatlands and how such efforts affect their knowledge and understanding; and what peatlands can tell us about the relations between science, policy, and society in times of global environmental change. We seek someone who is interested in newer environmental anthropology, open to theoretical innovation, and motivated to do in-depth ethnographic fieldwork.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Thermodynamics of ammonia-water mixtures
Summary of PhD Program:
Ammonia (NH3) is deemed by many to be a promising energy carrier to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from transport and a viable solution for global H2 transport. A challenge is the consequences of possible spills of liquid ammonia into water when it is transported on ships. Ammonia is often transported at a temperature well below the freezing point of water. A spill of ammonia in water will therefore rapidly evaporate. It will also react with water through a highly exothermic reaction. The interfacial dynamics and the thermo-physical properties will play a key role in how fast the ammonia spreads in both water and air, and where it ends up.
Application Deadline: 4th August 2024
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Dynamic Decision Support for Positive Energy Buildings and Neighbourhoods
Summary of PhD Program:
We have a vacancy for a 3-year full time position as a PhD researcher in the area of planning and design of Positive Energy Neighbourhoods and Districts. The work is connected to several ongoing EU-funded projects, i.e. ‘Climate Positive Circular Communities – ARV’, ‘Sustainable Plus Energy Neighbourhoods – syn.ikia’, and ‘Interoperable solutions to streamline PED evolution and cross-sectoral integration – PEDvolution’. The PhD candidate will participate in the EU projects mentioned above and develop a framework for a Dynamic Decision Support Guideline for the planning, design, and operation of Positive Energy Neighbourhoods. The development will build on previous and ongoing work within the EU projects in which relevant frameworks and guidelines are being developed for sustainable plus energy buildings and neighbourhoods.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hybrid Machine Learning
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD opportunity offers a unique chance to be at the forefront of the transformative field of hybrid modelling, combining the power of machine learning with physics-based approaches. Unexpected high overpressures in the subsurface continue to challenge oil and gas exploration on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, posing risks such as mud loss, kicks, and well loss. This PhD will focus on developing innovative solutions by integrating 3D pressure stochastic simulations with advanced machine learning techniques to enhance pore pressure prediction workflows. By improving the accuracy and robustness of subsurface pressure predictions, this research aims to make drilling operations safer and more cost-effective. As part of the research project “Hybrid Modelling with Machine Learning for Overpressure and Mud Weight Prediction – Big Pressure”, you will contribute to cutting-edge advancements that merge physical science and artificial intelligence.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geology/Geophysics
Summary of PhD Program:
These last two decades, our knowledge about extensional processes and rifting has evolved significantly, allowing improved assessment of frontier regions. However, uncertainties remain, notably regarding the crustal evolution through time. Although of primary importance for evaluating the deformation history, the crustal tectonic history remains poorly constrained for some specific time periods. On the Norwegian Continental Shelf, this is typically the case for the time period covering the post-orogenic collapse (mid-Devonian-Carboniferous), early rifting (Permo-Triassic) to crustal necking (Jurassic-early Cretaceous). New ways to model the temporal and spatial evolution of crustal thinning and basin formation across rift systems are needed.
