3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Adaptation of Shellfish Culture to Climate-Relating Changes in Deltaic Ecosystems

Summary of PhD Program:

The Delta Climate Center in Vlissingen is a new and innovative knowledge center in the field of climate adaptation. It unites science and practice through a unique partnership between knowledge institutions. Within the relevant work package, two aims are formulated to better understand the adaptation of low trophic aquaculture to a changing climate: 1) to model how water and nutrient runoff from land affects the potential for marine protein production in the Dutch Delta ecosystem and assess effects of future changes. 2) an experimental study to assist in model parameterization and to gain a better understanding of the ecophysiology of bivalves and their adaptation to increased variation in food supply and food quality across varying environmental gradients. The focus of the PhD study will be on the second aim, but will also contribute (e.g., through parameterization) to the first aim.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Enhanced micropollutant removal from surface water during soil passage
Summary of PhD Program:

Nature-based approaches, such as soil passage during river bank filtration and dune filtration, is commonly used as a first treatment step in drinking water production from surface water. Soil passage results in the partial removal of organic micropollutants (OMP) via biodegradation and sorption. As a PhD candidate in the Sino-Dutch project “Water SMART”, you will contribute to further developing nature-based approaches to enhance the removal of OMPs during soil passage. By stimulating microbial activity in the soil and by testing sorbent material amendment, you will explore the interplay between OMP sorption and biodegradation. The main objectives is to balance these two processes to optimize OMP retention and removal during soil passage. By collaborating with partners at TU Delft, the Chinese Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences and the Institute of Urban Environment in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, you will contribute to the development of novel strategies towards safe and sustainable drinking water production.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biosensor-based diagnostic platform for real-time monitoring of existing and emerging environmental pollutants

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD candidate to work in our project “BIOSENSEI: Biosensor-Based Diagnostic Platform Enabling Real-Time Monitoring of Existing and Emerging Pollutants”. The main aim of this project is to develop a real-time, multiplexed, end-to-end, tailored and reliable biosensor platform, using cellular responses, for the detection of abiotic pollutants (nutrients, estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances)); and biotic pollutants (microcystins). As part of this EU-funded project, this PhD programme encompasses the generation of whole-cell microbial biosensors employing bioengineering and genetic circuitry, as well as its integration in the project’s framework.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-scale Water Quality Modeling for Climate Resilient Wastewater Management

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to address the limited understanding in the impacts of future social-economic changes and climate extremes on sewage flows and treatment in cities/towns. This project also aims to assess the interactions between WWM for agriculture (including crops and livestock) and domestic WWM in rural and urban (upstream-downstream) environments, which are vital to understanding the overall effectiveness of WWM. You should have an interest in integrated modeling that combines models from disciplines (water quality and GIS) and in working with large datasets and numerical models.
