3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Explainable Natural Language Understanding
Summary of PhD Program:
ExplainYourself proposes to study explainable automatic fact checking, the task of automatically predicting the veracity of textual claims using machine learning methods, while also producing explanations about how the model arrived at the prediction. Automatic fact checking methods often use opaque deep neural network models, whose inner workings cannot easily be explained. Especially for complex tasks such as automatic fact checking, this hinders greater adoption, as it is unclear to users when the models’ predictions can be trusted.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in experimental electrocatalysis
Summary of PhD Program:
Water electrolysis is crucial in the green energy transition. Especially, membrane-based electrolyzers are a crucial technology that allows for dynamic operation, which makes them compatible with fluctuating renewable electricity. This leads to a resource challenge, as the electrolyzers rely on the scarce, precious metal iridium as an electrocatalyst. The project will focus on water electrolysis catalysts with decreased precious metal loadings, which are often unstable. The aim is to achieve an understanding of the fundamental degradation mechanisms that lead to the instability and related performance losses.
Application Deadline: 29-09-2025
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Section for molecular ecology and evolution
Summary of PhD Program:
Your task will be to develop new computational methods to study archaic introgression and applying them to the largest dataset of present-day human genomes available (>1.1 million people). The goal is to establish how many archaic human groups contributed to our genomes. Your task is to infer key parameters of the archaic human evolutionary history such as mutation rate, generation time, admixture history with other archaic humans, historic population size and selective forces which shaped their genome. You will investigate how many times they encountered modern humans, how long they coexisted with modern humans and where they interacted with modern humans.
Application Deadline: 28-09-2025
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding Brain Cell Function in Obesity
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join a research project focused on understanding how specific brain cell populations contribute to obesity and related metabolic diseases. The project will involve the analysis of large-scale single-cell datasets and aims to map how different cell types respond to metabolic and genetic changes. The successful candidate will contribute to developing molecular insights and resources that support the broader research community in identifying relevant cell populations and mechanisms involved in metabolic regulation.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in faba bean crop physiology
Summary of PhD Program:
There is a need to integrate more grain legumes into our agricultural systems to build efficient, resilient, and environmentally friendly plant-based food systems. DIGIFABA aims to develop digital phenotyping tools specifically designed to quantify and qualify the yield components of faba beans and detect drought stress in the field, thereby optimizing breeding strategies for yield stability in protein-rich crops for a sustainable future. To achieve this, the DIGIFABA project will focus on the creation and application of computer vision segmentation for the delineation of plant characteristics, the establishment of methodologies for the study of plant morphometry, the expansion and utilization of statistical analysis for growth profile evaluation, and the formulation and implementation of a mechanistic model tailored to faba beans.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Underpinning and Targeting AMPK for Treatment of Metabolic Disorders
Summary of PhD Program:
The overarching aim of the Sakamoto Group is to elucidate molecular mechanisms governing cellular energy sensing and the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis, with the ultimate aim of identifying and validating therapeutic candidates capable of correcting energetic imbalances in metabolic disorders. Our research focuses on how post-translational modifications, such as reversible phosphorylation, and allosteric regulation of signaling proteins and metabolic enzymes contribute to energy regulation. We also investigate how dysregulation in these processes drive the pathogenesis of cardiometabolic diseases.
Application Deadline: 21-09-2025
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neuroendocrinology and Metabolic Homeostasis
Summary of PhD Program:
The Gerhart-Hines Group is broadly interested in how neuronal, hormonal, nutrient, and bioenergetic signalling pathways collectively orchestrate systemic energy homeostasis and defend metabolic health. We explore coordination between peripheral and central homeostatic pathways through a combinatorial approach that brings together gene, protein, metabolite, and lipid profiling with cutting-edge in vivo physiological phenotyping and pharmacological engineering. Through this comprehensive approach, we believe we are poised to make transformative breakthroughs in the fundamental understanding of metabolic adaptation and to develop these findings into innovative strategies for counteracting cardiometabolic disease.
