We are looking for a PhD student (m/f/d) to join the research group ‘Stochastic Evolutionary Dynamics’ within the Department of Theoretical Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. The position is part of the Collaborative Research Unit ‘Density dependent symbiosis in planktonic systems – DynaSym’, which brings together several research groups across Germany to test and develop basic concepts of density dependence of the symbiosis form (e.g., shift from predator-prey to mutualistic interaction and back).

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Collective Dynamics of Living Neuronal Networks
Summary of PhD Program:
In this project, we use a novel stimulation approach for living neural networks. It exploitsself-organization within the network, with the aim to (a) greatly improve the information processing capacities of the network, and (b) develop an assay that can be used for clinical in vitro studies. In the research field of population dynamics of living neuronal networks, optogenetics and high-density electrode arrays allow us to manipulate and observe neurons on unprecedented scales, recording and stimulating thousands of neurons for hours, days and weeks.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cumulative culture in chimpanzees
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of this PhD project is to test whether chimpanzees have the capability and motivation to develop cumulative cultures – the process in which cultural innovations incrementally shape cultural expressions such that they become better suited for their envisioned purpose. You will study chimpanzees’ potential to create and maintain cumulatively established cultures by means of targeted experimental assays. Moreover, you will investigate whether chimpanzees’ social network properties are predictive of their potential to develop cumulative cultures with behavioural observations and network analyses.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
The SOLBAT initiative is funded by the Max Planck Foundation and poised to deliver pioneering work in the field of solar batteries and optoionics during the next five years. Research will focus on the emerging intersection of photo(electro)chemistry and solid state ionics and aim at the development of novel light storing devices and optoionic technologies, including various light-enhanced battery concepts, time-delayed (“dark”) photo(electro)catalysis, and light-assisted memory devices. Parkin, is currently recruiting 1 Postdoc, 2 Ph.D. students and 1 Engineer for a newly established German-Ukrainian Core of Excellence (CoE) “Plasma-Spin-Energy”. The CoE will be focused on experimental and theoretical research in the field of advanced plasma technologies and spintronic materials and technologies, administered by the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics (MPI-MSP) in cooperation with the V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (Kharkiv, Ukraine). 7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Social effects on animal microbiomes
Summary of PhD Program:
Recent research suggests another possible benefit: that social animals acquire some of their microbiome from their conspecifics. If this is true, then social partners may act as ‘reservoirs’ of beneficial microbes for individuals with newly developing or recently disrupted microbiomes. However, it is crucial to disentangle social microbiome transmission from other factors that affect the microbiome, such as diet, age, and landscape use, to evaluate this hypothesis. The Social Microbiome Group aims to understand how social living influences animal microbiomes, and in turn how microbes have shaped the costs and benefits of social evolution.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Primate microbiomes
Summary of PhD Program:
We are recruiting a motivated student interested in pursuing an PhD project to develop and test research questions about microbiome evolution in a long-term study of wild baboons inhabiting Amboseli National Park in Kenya. These animals have been the subject of continuous study for over 50 years, including regular collection of fecal samples for over 20 years – work that has resulted in the most extensive longitudinal microbiome datasets currently available for any animal species. The student will gain experience with methods for computational analysis of microbial genomes and metagenomes, as well as with bacterial culture. Visits to Amboseli to collect additional samples are also a possibility depending on the candidate’s interests.
