1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Noise and correlations in electrochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims at investigating the fundamental processes in nanoscale electrochemistry by exploiting the information contained in the electronic noise of electrochemical currents, and the correlations in the noise for multiple nanoprobes. The research project is financed by the NWO ‘zwaartekracht’ program Advanced Nano-Electrochemistry Institute Of the Netherlands (ANION).

2. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Cultural Anthropology in project “Diversity Outdoors”

Summary of PhD Program:

Through a comparative analysis of participation in outdoor recreation in Europe, DivOut examines how social inequalities are embodied. Outdoor recreation – such as hiking, climbing, swimming, but also birdwatching and camping – is as a pivotal arena where racialized encounters and practices manifest. By exploring the emerging grassroots outdoor movements that challenge these discourses we aim to better understand the embodiment of ethnoracial inequality on a sensorial level.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in exploring the history of early childcare in Central and Eastern Europe

Summary of PhD Program:

The late Habsburg Empire and, after 1918, six of its successor states offer an ideal laboratory to explore how the invisible work of caretaking was impacted by changing political, social and economic circumstances. In this ethnically and religiously diverse region, care continued during depressions, wars, genocides, displacements and revolutions. This project will be the first to study early childcare in this region systematically and conceptualize the history of private and public caretaking in early life more broadly.

4. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Climate Citizenship

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD candidate, you will conduct ethnographic research on these questions in either the Louisiana Delta (the United States) or the Tokyo Bay area (Japan). You will employ an “ecographic” research design, combining ethnographic methods with those from the ecological sciences in order to track how new forms of climate adaptation alter both environment and society. Your primary supervisor will be the project’s Principal Investigator, Dr. Andrew Littlejohn. The project is hosted by Leiden University’s Institute of Cultural Anthropology & Development Sociology.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI-driven co-design for High-Performance Computing in Radio Astronomy

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for two fully funded PhD candidates for a multi-disciplinary project on the boundary of AI (Artificial Intelligence), HPC (High-Performance Computing) and radio astronomy. Data-intensive science, such as radio astronomy, will shortly be faced with difficult choices since the vast amount of energy required to reduce large-scale telescope data will become more and more expensive and unsustainable. One way to address this issue is to use more efficient emerging technologies (like dedicated AI processors, in-memory computing, neuromorphic chips, etc.).

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Software Optimization and Compiler

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a PhD candidate in Software Optimization and Compiler Techniques. This is an exciting and fully-funded dual-appointment PhD candidate and junior software administrator position that allows you to both conduct cutting-edge research leading to a PhD thesis as well as gain experience in system administration in a scientific computing environment. Both require in-depth knowledge and understanding of low-level computer systems and as such these positions reinforce each other. The practice helps the theory, and the theory helps the practice. As such, this unique position allows you to become a highly specialized researcher in the field of structure and optimization of computer systems.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-Objective Optimization and Machine Learning for Hydrogen Technologies

Summary of PhD Program:

The Natural Computing Group (NACO) at LIACS, Leiden University, is seeking a highly motivated researcher to join our cutting-edge project on AI tool development for hydrogen energy systems (e.g., electrolysis systems). This initiative aims to enhance performance predictions and lifetime assessments of stack components through advanced data-driven modelling. You will work closely with experimental teams to continuously refine the model as more data becomes available and evaluate how short-term, small-scale test results translate to full-scale performance.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Explainable NLP for Regulatory Compliance Detection

Summary of PhD Program:

Are you passionate about Explainable AI (XAI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP)? Join our interdisciplinary team on compliance detection in Dutch regulatory contexts! This PhD position is about research in Explainable NLP for Regulatory Compliance Detection in Dutch Regulatory Contexts. You will develop AI-driven methods to detect and explain regulatory “grey areas,” working closely with experts in AI and law. You will be a part of the ICAI lab AI4Oversight, and collaborate with two universities, TNO and four inspectorates, together with five other PhD candidates.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theoretical Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, you will develop structured (demographic) models to study the coevolution of ageing and sociality during the evolution of eusociality and multicellularity. While this is mainly a theoretical and computational research project, it will be possible and encouraged to collaborate with empirical research groups for two reasons: 1) to discuss our model assumptions and their validity, and 2) to think about methods for testing our theoretical results (for example by using phylogenetic reconstructions or experimental evolution techniques).

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Interventions for Adolescents’ Susceptibility to Misinformation

Summary of PhD Program:

Teenagers grow up deeply immersed in the digital world, relying on social media as a primary source of information. Given the widespread issue of misinformation online, this raises concerns about its impact on their beliefs, social norms, and (political) identity formation. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD candidate to investigate and reduce adolescents’ susceptibility to misinformation. This project involves designing innovative behavioral experiments and translating findings into novel interventions.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Adolescents’ Susceptibility to Misinformation

Summary of PhD Program:

Teenagers grow up deeply immersed in the online world and use social media as a main source of information. This is concerning given the widespread problem of misinformation on social media. Exposure to misinformation can affect teenagers’ beliefs, social norms, and (political) identity formation. We seek a PhD candidate who is highly motivated and enthusiastic about conducting research on adolescents’ social media data, as well as developing innovative behavioural experiments to understand their susceptibility to misinformation.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in French linguistics

Summary of PhD Program:

Creole languages play a pivotal role in linguistics, as they have been argued to have unique properties setting them apart from other languages, due to their very specific conditions of emergence in colonies, through language contact between European and African languages. This hypothesis, known as “creole exceptionalism”, remains a subject of activee debate. However this debate has been mainly informed by data from higher-level linguistic structures (morphosyntax), with lower-level structures such as sound patterns receiving far less attention.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Predicting and testing reaction barriers on metal surfaces

Summary of PhD Program:

The Faculty of Science of Leiden University and the Leiden Institute of Chemistry are looking for a PhD student to perform research aimed at advancing the understanding of dissociative chemisorption reactions on metal surfaces. We focus on difficult-to-treat systems that are characterized by a low work function of the metal and/or a high electron affinity of the molecule. Reaction cannot yet be modeled accurately for these systems because charge rearrangement occurs between the molecule and the surface. This leads to failure of standard density functionals, and also to electron-hole-pair excitation in the metal breaking the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Traditional methods have struggled with these challenges, leading to large discrepancies between theory and experiment [1].
