University of Bergen, Norway invites multiple online application for Postdoctoral Positions in various research areas. Candidates interested in Postdoctoral Fellowships can check the details and may apply as soon as possible.
1. Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at the Department of Comparative Politics
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
The successful applicant will conduct research within the research project Legitimate Crisis Management and Multilevel Governance (LEGITIMULT) which is financed by the European Commission (Horizon Europe). LEGITIMULT assesses the impact of the measures taken by various international, national and subnational governments on multilevel institutions and intergovernmental relations in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The project analyses the effect of these measures on democratic governance, highlighting to what extent multilevel governance influences their impact on democracy, favouring a model of legitimate crisis management. We are looking for a postdoctoral research fellow who can help with the development of a coding scheme on intergovernmental relations between national and subnational governments and the collection of decisions taken by national and subnational governments in 31 European countries in relation to the Covid-19 crisis. The successful applicant will also help us to build and analyse a dataset that includes variables from existing datasets on multilevel governance institutions and democratic governance.
2. Researcher position: Understanding the logic of neural circuits that control behaviour in a simple chordate brain
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
Work in the Chatzigeorgiou group focuses on studying the evolution, development and function, of chordate nervous systems, using the invertebrate chordate Ciona intestinalis as a model organism. We perform developmental and functional studies with the aim to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the ability of Ciona larvae to sense a diversity of sensory cues and elicit ethologically relevant behaviours. This project will characterise at multiple levels the brain circuits that mediate mechanosensation and chemosensation in the larva. The first part of the project will focus on leveraging cutting-edge microscopy methods in combination with Genetically Encoded Calcium Indicators to understand the functional organization of these circuits. The second part will make use of genome editing, optogenetic and chemogenetic perturbations in combination with quantitative behavioural analysis to study how these circuits generate ethologically relevant behaviours. It is expected that the successful applicant also collaborates with other members of the workgroup, including students and postdocs.
3. Research fellow in artistic research
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
The project description should place the project in a subject/research field, and present the theme, issues, context, methods, and choice of work- and presentation forms. The project description shall present the project’s position in, and relevance to, the academic environment at the department, and account for the specific needs for professional and material resources, as well as any legal and ethical issues. The applicant must inform of any potential collaborating institutions and cooperation partners. We also request a separate progress plan for different parts of the work. We encourage applicants to contact a potential supervisor in the department to consider the relevance of the project idea for the research environment and possibilities for supervision.

5. Researcher (full-time temporary position)
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
Sjögren’s syndrome has among the highest female-to-male ratios of rheumatic diseases (9:1), making it highly interesting for studies on sex-bias in autoimmunity. Genetic studies have identified polymorphisms associated with Sjögren’s syndrome, and many of these genetic variants lead to differential gene regulation, so called expression quantitative loci (eQTL) effects. The project is built on the idea that sex is a biological context that may influence the eQTL effects of Sjögren’s syndrome-associated SNPs differentially in women and men. We seek to identify the genes thus regulated, and to explore their functional impact on the immune system and role in development of autoimmunity.
6. Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
This project is broadly aimed at elucidating the importance of the immune cells, and the micro-environment to which they are exposed, in orchestrating successful bone tissue engineering. Transplanted mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) encounter a myriad of synchronised interactions with the recipient’s immune system and these cellular interactions that affect the efficacy of the stem cell-therapy are largely unexplored. Emerging evidence suggests adaptive immunity plays an important role in this process and needs to be understood to improve the efficacy of bone regeneration. A particular subset of the adaptive immunity, regulatory T lymphocytes (Treg), have gained interest due to their critical potential on regeneration, which remains unexplored.
7. Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biomedicine, a full-time (100 %) position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the project ” K.G. Jebsen Center for decoding Parkinson’s disease -DECODE-PD”, financed by Stiftelsen Kristian Gerhard Jebsen. The present postdoctoral research fellow will work in a subproject led by Profs. Aurora Martinez and Charalampos Tzoulis.
8. Postdoctoral position in Islamic history and culture
Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:
The Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion invites applications for a 3-year postdoctoral position in the field of Islamic history and culture, relating to the topic of Islamic text circulation and usage in the Swahili coastal region. The position is part of the research project «MPrinT@East_AFRICA. Islamic Manuscript, Print and Practice: Textual adaptation in East Africa» financed by the Norwegian Research Council. The MPrinT project (2021-2025) will explore a core hypothesis that reforms in Islamic textual tradition and ritual practice during the 19th and 20th centuries took place within existing authority structures and led to a series of adaptations rather than breaks from tradition. To this end, the project will document, catalogue, and analyze Islamic textual material from the manuscript-to-print transition period in coastal East Africa (the Swahili coastal region).
