2. Fully Funded PhD Position in microbiology

Summary of PhD Program:

Viruses that infect planktonic algae and bacteria play a central role in marine ecosystems by regulating turnover, abundance, and diversity in microbial food webs. Over several years, we have collected DNA/RNA samples of viruses and their host organisms from the Arctic and polar marine ecosystems. These samples will be analysed alongside quantitative data on the environment and microorganisms. This work will form the basis for our further research in the Arctic. The work will include bioinformatics of metagenomes and transcriptomes, statistical analysis of data, and modelling. Some of the work will be conducted in close collaboration with our international partners, and therefore, periodic travel is to be expected.

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD study will address the transformation of Atlantic Water in the Norwegian Sea and Fram Strait, where the warm and saline waters flow poleward and partly recirculate in a complex current system under varying physical controls and processes. The successful candidate will investigate processes on scales from mesoscale eddies to small-scale turbulence and mixing. This includes instabilities of boundary currents, exchanges and subduction across fronts, responses to atmospheric and tidal forcing, and internal waves. The research will be based on observations from ship surveys, underwater gliders, and bottom-anchored moored instruments.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Climate Dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

Interactions between the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Ocean basins are increasingly recognized as a key factor in understanding climate variability and have the potential to improve seasonal to decadal climate predictions. The PhD candidate will investigate mechanisms of such basin interactions on decadal timescales and the joint influence on for instance high latitude climate. The candidate will analyze a new and novel coupled millennium reanalysis, which uses modern data assimilation and an extensive paleo-proxy archive, in addition to designing and performing targeted modelling experiments. As a PhD candidate at the Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen, you will also be affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR). BCCR is the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries and has a broad international environment.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in energy resources and system modeling

Summary of PhD Program:

The electricity consumption in Norway is expected to increase from todays 140 TWh to possibly 220 TWh in 2050, mainly driven by the transition to zero greenhouse emissions (electrification), industrial growth and new production. To tackle the increased demand, the Norwegian government has planned for 30GW of installed offshore wind power by 2040. This will drastically change the Norwegian electricity system and making the power system more weather dependent and the production more intermittent. The PhD will work will be twofold. The first part will be to improve and develop datasets and estimation algorithms for renewable energy that will enhance the simulation capabilities of the open-source energy market simulation model for operational planning JulES developed by the Norwegian Water and Energy Directorate (NVE).

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in physical oceanography

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD-project will focus on the Antarctic slope front dynamics, with particular focus on the circulation near ice tongues overhanging the continental slope. The PhD-candidate will set up and run idealised numerical experiments to study how the presence of an ice tongue modifies the slope front current dynamics and the heat flux into an ice shelf cavity further the south. The idealised modelling will be combined with analysis of in-situ observations (moored and shipboard measurements of velocity and hydrography) from the area around Trolltunga, an ice tongue extending northward from Fimbulisen in Dronning Maud Land.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in physical oceanography

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD-project will focus on processes related to shelf break exchanges in the Southern Weddell Sea, Antarctica, with particular focus on the inflow of warmer water masses from the deep ocean onto the continental shelf in the Filchner Trough region. The PhD candidate will address questions related to the effect of bathymetry, dense water outflow, seasonal and interannual variability in hydrography and atmospheric forcing on the warm inflow. The candidate will process and use altimetry-data from the new Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) in combination with conventional altimetry retrievals and existing in situ observations. The in-situ observations include moored and shipboard measurements of velocity and hydrography.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physical Oceanography

Summary of PhD Program:

The large-scale circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean plays a key role in regulating climate by facilitating the northward throughput of warm and salty waters within the extended Gulf Stream system. However, the role of variable gyre circulation in modulating the northward throughput of water, and potentially reducing meridional coherence in the large-scale overturning circulation, remains unknown. The appointed PhD candidate will address several key questions about North Atlantic gyre circulation, overturning circulation, and the mechanisms causing variability in the two, using a range of modelling tools such as Lagrangian simulations and ocean model perturbation experiments.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in quantum technology

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project will contribute to an interdisciplinary effort aimed at understanding the dynamical behavior of quantum systems, with a particular focus on their application in quantum optimization and quantum control. Relevant application domains include quantum sensing, energy grid optimization and/or jet evolution in quantum chromodynamics. The work will involve a combination of theoretical modeling, numerical simulations of quantum dynamics, and the use of high-performance computing facilities. The candidate will also have the opportunity to explore the capabilities of existing quantum computing platforms as tools for simulation and benchmarking.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The project will tightly combine atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with experimental methods sensitive to atomistic detail (in particular NMR relaxation). The PhD fellow will build a library of high-resolution experimental data of oligosaccharides, against which they will critically assess the current MD models and perform data-driven optimization. The verified models will be used to reveal the conformational ensemble and dynamics of oligosaccharides in the human glycome, in particular those relevant for virus–host interactions.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microelectronics

Summary of PhD Program:

Wireless acoustic transmission of data from sensors to the network has very limited bandwidth. To reduce the transmission requirement of data, onboard processing is therefore required in the sensors. This is especially relevant for sensor types that generate relatively large amounts of raw data. Then the raw data must be processed in the sensor in order to be able to transmit compressed data or a condition description based on analysis of the raw data. Onboard processing is also very relevant for units with multiple sensors (sensor fusion) where the combination of information from multiple sensors can be used to describe a condition or make a decision to send an alarm signal or take other actions locally.
