Summary of PhD Program:
The project will work alongside a leading industrial partner (Siemens), which brings together a number of world leaders in power electronics and energy conversion to develop solutions for Industrial motor drives as a primary application as well renewable energy as a secondary application. . The purpose is to improve the UKs energy infrastructure in applications such as manufacturing, warehousing, utilities supply, food & beverage processing and many others as we move into a low carbon economy.
Application Deadline: 5 May 2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Psychology, Nutrition, Population and Public Health
Summary of PhD Program:
Since the “cost of living crisis”, the number of people in the UK living in poverty has increased significantly, resulting in many more households facing food insecurity which is associated with reduced consumption of balanced nutritional intake and increased consumption of UPFs. Many households are also turning to local foodbanks for support. While foodbank parcels provide a vital lifeline by supporting food provision, parcels largely consist of items which are UPFs and lack in fresh food produce due to financial and logistical barriers.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neuroscienc, Genetics
Summary of PhD Program:
Funds are available to pay the fees of a MSc by Research in Medical and Health Care Studies for a student working on a project that seeks to produce a zebrafish model of episodic ataxia. Ataxia is a neurological disorder affecting movement, balance, and speech. A gene mutation has been identified in a family with episodic ataxia, to confirm if this is the causative mutation, zebrafish with the same mutation will be created to test for similar symptoms.
Application Deadline: 7 April 2025
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Wider Data Science Field, Maths or Computer Science
Summary of PhD Program:
The successful candidate will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment as part of a vibrant cohort of HDR UK-funded PhD students, with outstanding networking opportunities with fellow students and colleagues located across the 4 nations of the UK. HDR UK’s mission is to unite the UK’s health data to enable discoveries that improve people’s lives. Its 20-year vision is for large-scale data and advanced analytics to benefit every patient interaction, clinical trial, and biomedical discovery and to enhance public health.
Application Deadline: 7 April 2025
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sports nutrition
Summary of PhD Program:
Keeping players available for selection and ready to perform at a high level is a key challenge in elite sport. Indeed, professional rugby is an intense, collision-heavy sport that places severe demands on players, who are regularly exposed to pronounced exercise-induced muscle damage and soreness, which are present for several days after a match and persist throughout an entire competitive season. This can impair performance and result in injury or illness. Therefore, identification of optimal recovery strategies to alleviate post-exercise muscle damage and soreness is crucial.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mechanical Engineering (Materials Science, Chemical Engineering)
Summary of PhD Program:
Strain gauges are essential for precision sensing, measuring material deformation by detecting changes in electrical resistance. Their accuracy depends on the precise adhesion and integration of layers during fabrication, ensuring durability and reliable performance. This PhD project will develop innovative adhesive deposition and curing techniques to enhance both performance and sustainability in strain gauge manufacturing.
Application Deadline: 31 March 2025
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Materials Science & Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
The objectives of this PhD would be to explore the microstructure of standard and recycled 6xxx series alloys and how this would affect fatigue behaviour. This would involve fatigue testing of the alloys, including round bar, flat strips and hollow profiles, to determine the effect of the higher levels of scrap on the fatigue behaviour and performance of the alloys. In depth microstructural analysis would be required to determine how changes in microstructure, including type, shape and composition of precipitates and intermetallics, may change the behaviour of the alloy. Study of bulk material structures, surface effects, and fracture surfaces would also formulate part of this work.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics, Electronic and Electrical Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
In this spirit, the successful applicant will use state-of-the-art atomistic simulation methods to study few-layer quasi-van-der-Waals heterostructures of antimony with other suitable layered materials, such as Indium Selenide, and assess their potential for applications in highly sensitive thin-film photodetectors or similar optoelectronic devices. The main focus will be exploring the possibility of using twist angle and/or mechanical homo- and heterostrain as tuning knobs for the electronic and optical properties of the heterojunction.
Application Deadline: 31 March 2025
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science
Summary of PhD Program:
The electron spin properties of ground and excited state levels in molecular semiconductors dictate the photophysics in optoelectronic and photonic technologies. By developing new materials based on open-shell organic radicals that operate outside the established photophysics of standard (closed-shell) materials, we aim to to push the boundaries of spin, optical and magnetic properties that could improve current technologies and enable new opportunities (Nature Materials 2020, Nature Communications 2022, Nature 2023).
