5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Science, with a focus on machine learning

Summary of PhD Program:

Join our research group in a project at the intersection of environmental chemistry and data science. We seek a highly motivated PhD candidate to enhance the transparency of machine learning (ML) models designed to predict the biochemical activity of emerging organic pollutants such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), by applying explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) tools. This research will contribute to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of chemical toxicity, a critical aspect of environmental risk assessment.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Paper-based Diagnostics

Summary of PhD Program:

Paper-based diagnostics exhibit great potential for environmental and health sciences applications. In this project, the doctoral candidate will directly deposit optically active nanoparticles on filter papers by flame aerosol direct deposition and utilize them for point-of-care diagnostics in biomedicine (e.g. to detect bacterial presence in biological fluids), and for environmental applications, for example to detect the presence of pesticides in agricultural products.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Drug Nanocarriers

Summary of PhD Program:

Drug nanocarriers today rely primarily on lipid-based nanoparticles. However, these particles have limitations, for example they suffer from low drug loadings. In this project, we will explore the potential of flame-made inorganic nanoparticles as drug nanocarriers and their incorporation in lipid-based nanoparticles. We will utilize flame spray pyrolysis to produce the nanoparticles and we will study in detail their physicochemical properties. We will link these characteristics to the achieved drug loadings and optimize the nanoparticle synthesis process conditions to maximise the drug loading. We will start with passive nanocarriers (e.g. Calcium Phosphate) and move one to active nanocarriers, such as Cerium oxide or Gallium-based nanoparticles.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Sustainable organic bioelectronics

Summary of PhD Program:

Organic semiconductors have the potential to increase device sustainability in bioelectronic applications such as short-term disposable sensors for diagnostics, environmental and food monitoring. However, the adoption of organic electronics relies on the discovery of materials combining high performance with easy scale-up production at low costs. This project explores blends with majority-content insulating polymers to increase the sustainability and impact of organic semiconductors for bioelectronics. The work is highly interdisciplinary, including materials development, characterization, and evaluation as core components in electrochemical transistors.
