5. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We are seeking a Research Associate to work on a recently awarded STFC grant “Penrose processes in an analogue black hole formed in hybrid light-matter (polariton) superfluid” in Sheffield. The researcher will work in the group of Dr Sam Dolan (School of Mathematics and Statistics) on topics in analogue gravity, and they will provide theoretical modelling for the experimental group led by Prof Dmitry Krizhanovskii (Department of Physics and Astronomy).

The project addresses fundamental physics questions with state-of-the art semiconductor quantum technologies developed in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the National Epitaxy Facility at the University of Sheffield: it relates general relativity to hydrodynamics and physics of macroscopically ordered light-matter states in solids, and it opens up new avenues in the study of quantum phenomena and gravity effects on the microscale. The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent experience relevant to mathematical modelling and physics. Experience of solving ordinary and partial differential equations with exact, approximation and numerical methods is essential.

Application Deadline: 26th July 2023

6. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

In this project, you will use techniques from both quantum metrology and quantum error correction to find the optimal
quantum error correction techniques and codes that will optimize the performance of noisy quantum metrology. This will
involve the development of near-term quantum error correction techniques and new quantum metrological protocols that
must satisfy physical constraints and includes the use of mathematical tools such as combinatorics and mathematical
optimization. You will have a background in either quantum metrology or quantum error correction. You will contribute
actively to the research directions within the project and present the results in international conferences. You should have a
PhD in quantum information theory, or a related subject.

Application Deadline: 26th July 2023

7. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We are seeking candidates with a good Honours degree in Physics or Engineering (or equivalent) and a PhD in MRI Physics /
Engineering (or equivalent). Candidates should ideally have practical experience in proton and / or non-proton spectroscopy
and spectroscopic imaging, but those with relevant experience in other areas of MR Physics will also be considered.
This role involves MR acquisition methodology development, so previous experience in pulse sequence programming (ideally
in the GE EPIC environment) and familiarity with RF coils would be advantageous.

11. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

This world-leading team of researchers focus on speech and language technology. Working on new ways to integrate a variety
of speech technology labelling, clustering or segmentation tasks into a single algorithm or process, in the context of deep
neural networks. Even end to end (E2E) automatic speech recognition is typically considered as a standalone process,
independent of other speech audio technology tasks such as diarisation, acoustic event detection or intent recognition. There
is recent interest in integration of a range of speech technology systems, enabled by the commonality of deep learning
structures. Several solutions to specific problems have been proposed. Such strategies involve fusion of input streams at
different levels, parallel multi-stream recognisers, or simply label prefixing. The objective in this project is to explore and
analyse the benefit of different strategies and find new ways of efficiently combining multi-task recognition.

12. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We seek to appoint someone with experience of glacier or ice sheet modelling, with a background in glaciology, and ideally
with some experience of statistical methods of data analysis.
Climate change is depleting the stores of water held in snow and ice within Andean water towers. These changes are driven
by a complex climatology; snowfall amounts are increasingly delivered by fewer, more extreme precipitation events. The
steep topography of the Andes represents a challenge for climate and environmental models, especially because orographic
processes greatly influence precipitation phase and snowfall rates. This makes understanding past, and potential future,
changes to mountainous water resources challenging.
