1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing imaging and artificial intelligence to tackle antimicrobial resistance

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project will use single-cell imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches to detect antimicrobial resistance within bacterial populations that cause life-threatening infections such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus (Orazi et al. mBio 2019). You will apply state-of-the-art, machine learning methods (deep neural networks and evolutionary algorithms) on big-data from thousands of individual bacterial (Lapinska et al. eLife 2022) to extract information on the efficacy of antibiotics against bacterial populations and rapidly predict antimicrobial resistance. Moreover, by using omics, bioinformatics and AI software, such as AlphaFold, you will identify novel and more effective antibiotics that will allow to overcome antimicrobial resistance.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantifying the Benefits of Modern Methods of Construction

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this project is to provide a credible and visible evidence base for the benefits of modern methods of construction. The construction industry is a significant consumer of raw materials and natural resources and generates an estimated 39% of the world’s carbon emissions. Innovation within the construction sector lags many other industries. While several modern methods of construction (MMC) have been developed in recent years which have the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the built environment, the use of these methods has not become widespread. The ability and willingness of construction firms to develop and adopt modern methods of construction will be hugely significant in their progress against these targets but the complexity of supply chains means a holistic, interdisciplinary, and industry-led approach is needed.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Unravelling the Aquatic Chemical Landscape

Summary of PhD Program:

Aquatic ecosystems are under increasing pressure due to global transitions such as climate change, demographic shifts, evolving agricultural practices, and rapid technological advancements. These stressors include untreated waste discharge, microplastics pollution, and the frequent occurrence of algal blooms, all of which threaten the integrity of temperate aquatic systems. Understanding these disruptions, is crucial for the effective management of aquatic ecosystem health. A significant challenge in water quality assessment is the identification and understanding of emerging contaminants. With numerous chemicals in use today, many undergo degradation, producing environmental metabolites that complicate detection and assessment of associated risks.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding the spatiotemporal origin of the warming in the Southern Ocean. Oceanography

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to shed light on the spatiotemporal origin of the warming of the Atlantic part of the Southern Ocean by tracking back in time and space the heat uptake and redistribution by the world ocean using oceanic biogeochemical and transient tracers. Knowledge about the ocean’s absorption of ‘excess’ heat i.e., the heat that has accumulated in the Earth system as a result of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, is essential for estimating future global warming. The oceans have absorbed ~90% of this excess heat. Of these, although they only occupy a quarter of the world’s ocean surface, the seas surrounding Antarctica, known as the Southern Ocean (SO), are responsible for ~3/4 of this excess heat absorption.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geopolitics of the Body

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a PhD student to work on any appropriate project that combines critical concepts and ideas developed in the fields of critical geopolitics, on the one hand, and feminist approaches to the spatial politics of bodies, on the other. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will work collaboratively with the supervisory team to develop suitable empirically focused case studies that address a range of overlapping and complementary issues. It is likely that the project will have its core the relationship between geopolitics and a range of themes such as; bodily autonomy; biological determinism; state violence; and citizenship.
