1. Fully Funded PhD Position in study evolutionary aspects of plant cell biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The Denninger Lab seeks a highly motivated Ph.D. student or PostDoc to study the evolution of RhoGTPase signalling in Streptophyte algae, Liverworts and Mosses. We investigate how plant RhoGTPase activators evolved during the conquest of land and how their properties adapted during the evolution of the green lineage. To address these questions, you will use bioinformatical, biochemical and cell-biological approaches, with an emphasis on live cell imaging.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in modelling of smart technologies for African livestock systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The rapid advance of smart technologies applied to the agriculture and livestock sectors, for instance, drones, eartags, weather prediction technologies, and handheld devices, present novel opportunities for African livestock farmers to adapt to climate change and improve environmental performance. The aim of this research is to evaluate a range of potential smart technologies on environmental performance of livestock and resilience to climate change, particularly in East Africa. The work of this candidate will prioritise biophysical analysis of smart technolgoes, and will involve collaboration with experimental researchers as well as other modellers. There is another PhD position open at the University of Queensland (Australia), which focuses on the development and application of an integrated economic-biophysical framework to assess the role of digital tools and technologies. Candidates for both positions will be interviewed by the project team.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Floodplain Forests along the Middle Isar

Summary of PhD Program:

The research initiative “A-DUR” intends to develop interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary solutions to the current challenges faced by degraded floodplain forests near urban areas in Germany. Focusing on the “Floodplain Forests along the Middle Isar,” (Naturwald Mittlere Isar) the project examines the impacts of altered site conditions, forestry practices, and recreational activities. It aims to derive recommendations for the revitalization and regeneration of these forests and identify their multifunctional potential for biodiversity, local recreation, and climate protection. This endeavor is collaborative, involving a mix of academic, governmental, and private sector partners, offering opportunities to PhD candidates to gain insights into various field of science and practice. “A-DUR” is comprised of 5 social science and natural science sub-projects, next to governmental and non-governmental organizations.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in forest dynamics and their role in carbon sequestration

Summary of PhD Program:

This subproject aims to deepen our understanding of forest dynamics and their role in carbon sequestration within the Naturwald Mittlere Isar region. It encompasses detailed analysis of forest structure variations due to historical land use and species composition, including coniferous forests, hybrid poplar stands, and natural forest types. The project leverages existing inventory data and cutting-edge Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) technology to upscale findings through Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data. It also focuses on estimating above-ground carbon storage, especially in hardwood floodplain forests, and ongoing carbon sequestration in relation to forest dynamics such as growth, mortality, and regeneration.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human-Computer Interaction, AI and Software Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

In recent years, the integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) has transformed various aspects of the technology. An emerging area is the use of LLMs to automate user interface (UI) tasks, ranging from executing complex actions to manipulating software functions in various applications. This can significantly reduce the burden on users, especially disabled or elderly people using the software. You will work on using LLMs for UI automation, which can be used for both software testing and improving software accessibility.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Optimization & scaling of porous transport layers for PEM fuel cells using laser structuring

Summary of PhD Program:

Hydrogen-powered PEM fuel cells are an essential part of decarbonization strategies in the transportation sector, for example trucks, ships, trains and airplanes. However, a deeper understanding of water management, especially in terms of scalability, is necessary to increase power densities. As part of the Impedia project, universities, research institutes and industrial partners are working together on a concept and implementation to reduce mass transport losses in fuel cells at high current densities. For this purpose, special structures should be incorporated into diffusion media using laser perforation, which enable the channel-like removal of produced water from the cell in order to avoid flooding phenomena.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in process engineering for coffee extraction

Summary of PhD Program:

Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks in the world with corresponding economic importance. It is prepared by extracting aromatic substances from a particle pack of roasted and ground coffee beans. Extraction from flow-through particle packs can also be found in many other applications in process engineering. What these processes have in common is that they can be viewed as a superposition of a flow through a particle pack and a mass transport problem. The question of the optimal design of coffee extraction in order to achieve quality specifications for the respective process as efficiently and effectively as possible is being addressed as part of a larger cooperation project. Both experimental studies and mathematical models are used as tools.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in In-situ electron microscopy of metal-support interactions in electrocatalysts

Summary of PhD Program:

Modern electron microscopes provide direct insights into the atomic arrangement and chemical composition of (functional) materials. Due to the strong interaction between electrons and matter, electron microscopic examinations are usually carried out in a vacuum. The images generated therefore provide detailed insights into the sample examined, which, however, exists in isolation in a thermodynamic equilibrium state. However, in order to better understand how catalysts work, it is necessary to investigate the structure-property correlation under relevant reaction conditions. By directly observing the reaction-induced dynamic interplay using in-situ and operando electron microscopy, it is possible to investigate how the function of a catalyst arises from the interaction between the catalyst and the chemical environment.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Immunology

Summary of PhD Program:

Our profile and the research project Our team is committed to basic and applied translational research in neglected tropical diseases (NTD) and Global Health. One of the pillars is to improve our understanding of the immunopathogenesis of Th2-driven diseases such as helminth infections and allergies, specifically the mechanisms underlying tissue inflammation and immunomodulation. Such understanding will enable the development of effective therapeutic interventions and eventually policies to promote better disease management. In this context, we have recently provided insights into helminth-modulated lipid mediators as novel tissue-specific signals contributing to maintaining the delicate balance between immune activation and tolerance through the development of regulatory T cells (Treg).
