Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.
Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.
1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ecology
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD position will form part of a research project concerned with the effects of climate change and habitat loss on natural systems. As humans have become aware of their negative effects on biodiversity, there has been a strong focus creating protected areas such as nature reserves and national parks. There is now a goal to protect 30% of the world’s area by 2030, but is still more or less unknown how effective the existing protected area system is. The PhD student will use historical and modern data relating to climate, land use and species occurrences to evaluate how protected areas together with other conservation measures have affected trends of land-use change, reduced extinction risk and facilitated colonisation of expanding species. The position is based in Sweden, and will use data from both Sweden and Great Britain.
Application Deadline: 25/02/2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biology
Summary of PhD Program:
Intercropping of cereals and legumes holds significant potential for developing sustainable agri-food systems powered by biologically fixed nitrogen to deliver high-quality plant food protein, but innovations on the components of these cropping systems and their interplay are needed to bring them to their full potential. The project is part of the N2CROP centre for legume innovation, and will focus on intercropping of faba bean and cereals. Above- as well as belowground complementarity and interactions between crops will be examined with focus on nitrogen dynamics, including biological nitrogen fixation, transfer of nitrogen between the intercropped species, and the effect of specific rhizobium strains on the fixation.
Application Deadline: 2024-03-26

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Animal Science
Summary of PhD Program:
The project includes two years of research education. In this project you will be focusing on the about 50 linearly described traits that have been recorded on young SWB horses since 2013. These conformation, gait and jumping traits are assessed on a scale from one biological extreme to the other, e.g., short to long, inelastic to elastic. The traits will be correlated to health status, collected from surveys and insurance data, longevity and competition results. A large part of the project will be about data modeling and it is important that you enjoy working with statistical analyses.
Application Deadline: 2024-02-01
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in molecular parasitology
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of the PhD project is to develop markers for the detection of anthelmintic resistance. You will investigate fundamental questions about genetic changes in parasites (roundworms) treated with different dewormers on Swedish sheep farms. The work includes laboratory work (metagenomics) and subsequent computer analyses. The PhD student will collaborate with researchers from different disciplines such as molecular genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics and parasitology.
Application Deadline: 2024-03-01
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemical interactions of biopolymers for development of biomaterials with added functionalities
Summary of PhD Program:
The candidate for the PhD position is expected to carry out research focused on wood science and technology as a subject area with a strong emphasis on the chemical modification of wood cell wall structural compounds and their chemical interactions with other biopolymers. The research concerns also understanding of the wood anatomical structure, material properties and the impact of various wood modification approaches and processes on the wood/fiber quality – the above aiming at development of novel biomaterials with tailored/added functionalities.
Application Deadline: 2024-02-15
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Identifying sources of biological nitrogen fixation in boreal forests
Summary of PhD Program:
The Ph.D. project will combine genetic and stable isotope methods to identify other prominent niches of nitrogen fixation across forest successional gradients from stand initiation to old-growth forest, in harvested and wildfire-origin stands in Sweden, Finland, and Alaska. Moreover, the student will quantify the responses of newly identified niches of nitrogen fixation to climate change factors in controlled experiments.
Application Deadline: January 31 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Energy supply systems for electric forestry machines
Summary of PhD Program:
As a doctoral student, you have great freedom in your work, but also great responsibility for both running and achieving the goals of your project. You will be supported by a team of experienced and dedicated supervisors and departmental colleagues. You will be one of four doctoral students recruited simultaneously to the same research group. You will all be part of the faculty’s Silva research school, which provides social and professional activities during your PhD – and a network that lasts a lifetime! This PhD project is also part of a larger research project with an industrial PhD student at Komatsu Forest and Luleå University of Technology.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in forest economics
Summary of PhD Program:
We are searching for a doctoral student to join the Department of Forest Economics at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Umeå. The student will work on the project “Climate off-farm rippled impacts on wellbeing and behavioral resilience: cocoa value-added chains in West Africa’ funded by the Swedish Research Council. Candidates are encouraged to review research by Francisco X. Aguilar, Professor, Department of Forest Economics, available here and on Google Scholar before applying.
Application Deadline: February 29 2024
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Private forest owners’ work efficiency and work environment in logging operations with agricultural tractors
Summary of PhD Program:
Forestry work with agricultural tractors is already common in Sweden, but also dangerous as it is partly performed outside the machine cabin and includes large forces from machines and trees. This project therefore focuses on developing efficiency and safety in forestry work with agricultural tractors in semi- and fully professional small-scale enterprises. As a PhD student, you will conduct field studies, which includes contacts and cooperation with private forest owners, contractors and/or machine manufacturers. You will also develop UAV-based methods to study this risky work.
Application Deadline: January 31, 2024
10. Fully Funded PhD Position in plasmids in plant beneficial bacteria
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will catalog, characterize, and evaluate the usefulness of plasmids in Sphingomonas strains isolated from diverse plant-associated habitats in Sweden. This includes characterizing many Sphingomonas chromosomes and their associated plasmids to estimate plasmid prevalence and signatures of adaptation. It also includes measuring the stability of a large panel of plasmids when challenged with treatments designed to remove them. Finally, the project will mix together strains with all, some, or none of their plasmids removed and let them compete on plants to determine the positive contribution of plasmids to bacterial fitness.
Application Deadline: 2024-01-31
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in forest economics
Summary of PhD Program:
REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) initiatives aim to prevent emissions and conserve the area and integrity of forests. Past research has evaluated their effectiveness to prevent deforestation but has largely neglected degradation. This is of critical societal important as degradation is a major source of carbon emissions from forests and it can lead to the loss of ecosystem services vital to local communities. In this project we will assess the extent to which REDD+ initiatives have prevented forest degradation in the context of Argentina’s Atlantic forest. The Atlantic forest is one of the terrestrial ecosystems with the greatest endemic biodiversity in the world.
Application Deadline: February 16 2024
12. Fully Funded PhD Position in retail actions for food waste reduction
Summary of PhD Program:
The primary tasks of the PhD student are to write a doctoral thesis and develop independence as a researcher within the project’s framework. In this role, they will conduct research for the project, involving the collection and analysis of both qualitative materials and quantitative data. These materials will foremost be created through interaction with customers and employees in grocery stores. The work also entails participating in and eventually leading the writing of scientific articles in English, presenting ongoing research both within and outside academia, and completing the PhD program.
