1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Brain Algorithms and Circuits

Summary of PhD Program:

Our research interest is to investigate how the synaptic circuitry of the vertebrate brain gives rise to the computational algorithms that animals use to solve real-world behavioral problems. We study this question in the larval zebrafish, where we can combine behavioral experiments, and state-of-the-art functional imaging, electrophysiology, and electron microscopy techniques.

Application Deadline: August 31st 2025

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Identifying Brittle-ductile Transitions in Intermetallic-metal Hetero-interfaces

Summary of PhD Program:

We are currently seeking a highly motivated PhD student or Postdoctoral researcher to join our department at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials (MPI Sus-Mat) in Düsseldorf, Germany. The successful candidate will work on the DFG-funded project “BRITE-TIME – Identifying brittle-ductile transitions in intermetallic-metal hetero-interfaces”. This project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on in situ interface micromechanics, with the goal to unravel new mechanistic insights on the influence of temperature and strain rate on the mechanical behavior of interfaces through local micro-shear testing.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

In the framework of the EU-funded ACME project (Astrophysics Centre for Multi-messenger studies in Europe) we are looking for a post-doctoral researcher as a Support Scientist (PhD) (m/f/d) to be located at the 100-m telescope at Effelsberg. The successful candidate will work in a user support team in close collaboration with colleagues on site and scientists at the MPIfR in Bonn, e.g. from the APEX team. With a focus on instrumentation relevant for spectroscopy, the candidate’s use of the telescope for her/his own research is strongly encouraged and expected.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Mechanisms of Membrane Trafficking

Summary of PhD Program:

We are a small international team based at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences in Göttingen, Germany. We aim to understand how molecular machines select transmembrane cargo proteins and drive the formation of transport carriers within the endosomal network. In this mission, we primarily rely on cryo-ET and subtomogram averaging to visualize molecular machines in reconstituted form or directly inside the cell. This approach requires biochemistry or cell biology for the sample preparation and scripting skills for the ET data processing.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-modal Biological-Classification-of-Mental-Disorders (BeCOME) study

Summary of PhD Program:

The main focus of the department “Genes and Environment” (lead by Prof. Dr. Dr. med. univ. Elisabeth Binder) lies on stress- and adverse life event-related psychiatric disorders. Exposure to adverse life events, including trauma and chronic stress, is the most robust risk factor for mood and anxiety disorders but also other psychiatric and medical disorders. In our research we aim to gain a better understanding of the adaptive as well as maladaptive molecular, cellular and circuit level factors influencing our response to stress.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Interpretable Machine Learning for Catalytic Reaction Network Discovery

Summary of PhD Program:

A full-time PhD or Postdoctoral position is available in a collaborative Max Planck research project within the SusMax network focused on developing interpretable machine-learning frameworks for kinetic multiphase reaction-network discovery in the catalytic conversion of renewable feedstocks. The successful candidate will integrate multiscale first-principles modeling, sparse symbolic regression, and adaptive experimental design in self-driving laboratory settings to elucidate both desired catalytic pathways and degradation mechanisms at inorganic–organic interfaces.

Application Deadline: August 31, 2025

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exploring Supernova Remnants in eROSITA and Multiwavelength Data

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project is in the field of exploring stellar endpoints, e.g., supernova remnants and neutron stars. Successful candidates shall make use of various data from current radio, optical, and high-energy observatories(e.g., ASKAP, MeerKAT, XMM-Newton, Chandra, JWST, etc.), take an active part in the preparation of observing proposals for the current optical, radio, and high-energy observatories and ideally be familiar with the standard data analysis tools.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Unravelling the mysteries of Vibrational Strong Coupling

Summary of PhD Program:

For the ERC Synergy project “Unravelling the Mysteries of Vibrational Strong Coupling” (UnMySt) we are looking for one Postdoctoral researcher (f/m/d) and one Doctoral researcher (f/m/d). The UnMySt project (“Unravelling the Mysteries of Vibrational Strong Coupling”), funded by a prestigious Synergy Grant from the European Research Council (ERC), investigates how quantum electrodynamics can be harnessed to control chemical and physical processes at the molecular level.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theory and algorithms for structure determination from single molecule x-ray scattering images

Summary of PhD Program:

Single molecule X-ray scattering experiments with free electron lasers offer a new route to the structure determination of biomolecules. Due to the super-low signal-to-noise-ratio, computing the structure from such data is challenging, and new theoretical methods and algorithms are required. The research project aims at deriving priors for Bayesian methods from atomistic simulations and machine learning. It also offers the opportunity to work with data from the European XFEL facility at DESY.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bioengineering of a promiscuous methanogen hydrogenase for synthesizing renewable organics

Summary of PhD Program:

Hydrogenotrophic methanogens grow on H2 and CO2 at the edge of the thermodynamic limit. These archaea depend on a set of unique enzymes to catalyse the reactions in the reductive acetyl-CoA pathway. Notably, among these enzymes is a highly promiscuous hydrogenase which we aim to evolve for high stereospecificity for producing valuable organic compounds.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Uncovering the evolution of metabolic interactions in intrinsically disordered peptides

Summary of PhD Program:

While enzymes have specific binding pockets with well-known interaction residues, interaction motifs are hardly known for intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). Using a diverse range of tools and approaches we aim at uncovering the specific motifs necessary to drive specific reactions inside compartments and use this knowledge to taylor IDPs for enhanced biocatalysis.
