1. Funded PhD Position in Clean water from low grade heat-powered process: advanced models
Summary of PhD Position:
In this project, you will research and develop advanced dynamic mathematical models of an innovative technology that uses low temperature heat for the production of water with different quality (from drinkable to industry and agriculture). The technology will be powered by ultralow energy and exploit the temperature differences available in nature: air, soil and natural water (e.g. lakes, seas, rivers).
Application Deadline: 31/05/2026
2. Funded PhD Position in Clean water from low grade heat-powered process: a proof-of-concept
Summary of PhD Position:
Climate change is already exacerbating water scarcity bringing uncertainty in the future of the water availability vs. abstraction (water stress), especially in delicate eco-systems. At the same time, industry highly relies on water. In most of the water-demanding industrial sectors high water demand is co-located with high energy demand (water-energy nexus), similarly to countries that benefit from high solar thermal energy (high energy availability) and at the same need water. The co-location of energy in form of heat and water is an opportunity.

3. Funded PhD Position in Bottom-up assembly of multi-compartment synthetic cells
Summary of PhD Position:
Do you want to design and construct synthetic life-like cells? A major goal of synthetic biology is to create life-like artificial cells from non-living components, i.e. the bottom-up approach. This exciting project will focus on designing, constructing, and testing synthetic cells with multiple sub-compartments. Just like their living counterparts (i.e. eukaryotic cells), synthetic cells with different inner compartments allow multiple and advanced functionalities.
Application Deadline: 31/12/2025
4. Funded PhD Position in Biomimetic membranes for applications in electrosynbionics and biosensing
Summary of PhD Position:
The project will begin with a literature review. This will be coupled to a technoeconomic analysis of biomimetic membranes, the aim of which will be to assess suitability of different materials for applications involving mass production. For training purposes, the student will reproduce selected literature results before moving on to systems of their own design. They will design, build and characterise complex membrane structures, demonstrating the ability to engineer the membrane shape. They will test the effect of using their structures in selected devices.

5. Funded PhD Position in Biomass conversion to fine chemicals via photocatalysis processes
Summary of PhD Position:
The conversion of biomass into value-added platform chemicals can greatly alleviate the reliance on fossil feedstock. Biomass alcohol such as benzyl alcohol is one of the important biomass-derived platform compounds and a significant feedstock, which are used to produce a series of value-added derivatives, such as benzaldehyde, hydrobenzoin, benzoin, and deoxybenzoin.
Application Deadline: 28/02/2026
6. Funded PhD Position in Biodegradable gas sensors
Summary of PhD Position:
This project will develop a compact, low-power sensor node that integrates printed organic photovoltaics (OPV) with a multi-modal array of disposable chemiresistive and electrochemical sensing elements to detect trace vapours from nitroaromatics, explosive taggants, and key environmental gases including NOx, ammonia, carbon monoxide and common VOCs.
Application Deadline: 31/01/2026
7. Funded PhD Position in Bayesian transfer learning for underwater signals
Summary of PhD Position:
Modern machine learning methods require large amounts of training data for reliable predictions, and can degrade significantly in performance when the test data differs from the training data distribution. In transfer learning, one has access to a source data set (e.g. vessel sounds in UK coastal waters) as well as a small amount of data from a target data set for which data collection is costly or difficult (e.g. acoustic signature of unknown foreign vessels in remote waters).
Application Deadline: 31/01/2026

8. Funded PhD Position in Bayesian Machine Learning on Strategically Manipulated Data
Summary of PhD Position:
Conventional machine learning methods are not designed to deal with the fog of war. Concerns from security and defence researchers have therefore lead to the development of adversarial machine learning methods. However, most prior work in this area focuses on very naïve threat models and make the assumption that the model trainer has perfect knowledge of the adversary’s capabilities.
Application Deadline: 31/01/2026
9. Funded PhD Position in Adaptive structures for operational variability and damage management
Summary of PhD Position:
This project aims to investigate the capabilities of adaptive structures that change their geometry and mechanical properties to accommodate operational loading and damage management. The core objective of this project is to engineer an adaptive structure that adjusts to the prescribed loading conditions. This adaptation is achieved by integrating local structures that accommodate stiffness variations along the global structure.

10. Funded PhD Position in Adaptive Multiagent Decision Making in Multi-Sensor Platforms (Thales)
Summary of PhD Position:
This thesis research project seeks to develop an AI framework that will enable reliable and efficient decision making by humans operating complex, multi-sensor (land and naval) platforms. This framework will support hierarchical multiagent reasoning and reinforcement learning at different levels of abstraction and over long time horizons, under open-world uncertainty and resource limitations.
Application Deadline: 31/01/2026
11. Funded PhD Position in Adaptive Low-Dimensional Monte Carlo Methods for High-Dimensional Multi-Target Tracking
Summary of PhD Position:
High-dimensional multi-target tracking poses severe computational challenges for sequential inference. Although particle filters provide a principled Monte Carlo framework, their efficiency collapses with dimension. This project aims to identify and exploit hidden low-dimensional structures within multi-target systems, enabling adaptive filtering methods that retain Monte Carlo flexibility while mitigating the curse of dimensionality.
Application Deadline: 31/01/2026
12. Funded PhD Position in Adaptable AI in the Wild for Defence and Security
Summary of PhD Position:
We will develop a low-cost alternative to AI post-training that relies on exploiting a local bank of neural modules, implemented with parameter-efficient adapters (e.g., LoRA) and related lightweight components, for deployment on defence and security platforms.
