1. Postdoctoral position (2 years) in stream ecology and biogeochemistry

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

Efforts to restore streams and rivers are increasing worldwide but often fail to recover good ecological status. This international project (RESTOLINK) will broadly explore the idea that restoration efforts fail because they do not consider the spatial scales of stream hydromorphology that are most relevant to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. We will work toward a new framework for evaluating restoration success by mechanistically linking three central facets of stream ecosystems: hydromorphological heterogeneity at relevant scales, multi-group biodiversity, and ecosystem multifunctionality, including nutrient retention and food web complexity. We will test this framework in streams across broad latitudinal gradients, from boreal to tropical biomes, and will thus explore how biome-specific factors, such as climate, vegetation, and hydrology, set the boundaries for local responses.

2. Post doctor in NMR-based structural biology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

This postdoctoral position is part of a Swedish council financed research project to unravel the regulation of programmed cell death at the molecular level with focus on the structure of the proteins and biological membranes involved in this important process. Important key players in the mitochondrial (intrinsic) cell death pathway are membrane-active proteins of the Bcl-2 family. The main objective of this project is to understand the function – and underlying structural properties – of these proteins and their interactions with the mitochondrial membrane environment. For this purpose we will use structural biological methods focusing on solid-state NMR spectroscopy of lipid-protein complexes, complemented by liquid-state NMR.

3. Postdoctoral position in Pharmacology

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

A 2-year postdoctoral position is available to study the pharmacological interactions between cannabinoid and dopamine receptors in cannabis-induced psychosis. The research will be carried out at the Department of Integrative Medical Biology, which offers a stimulating and international research environment located in newly renovated and state-of-the art research labs. The employment will be on a full-time, fixed-term position for two years, located in Umeå starting 1st of July 2022 or upon agreement. Last date for application is 20th May 2022.

4. Post doctor in machine learning for single-cell data analysis

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

Gene isoforms play key roles in disease etiology and outcome. Despite that gene isoforms are involved in most biological processes, they are commonly ignored because we lack tools to understand them. In this project we will build new large-scale machine learning tools to extract gene isoform information from commonly existing single-cell RNA-seq data. The approach we consider is based on variational autoencoders and sequence models. The challenges lie in the data being extremely large, sparse, and noisy. The project will open doors into the currently most rapidly expanding field in biology. You will carry out formulation, implementation and testing of machine learning approaches to model and understand single-cell RNAseq data. You will present your findings, write manuscripts, help supervising students, and actively contribute to a collegial lab culture.

5. Two postdoc positions (3 years) focusing on plant and microbial carbon and nitrogen cycling in the Arctic

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

The positions are part of a large interdisciplinary project (https://kaw.wallenberg.org/en/research/winter-studies-arctic-yield-new-insights-greenhouse-gas-emissions) that aims to understand and quantify how processes during the arctic winter may be decisive for overall feedbacks from arctic tundra to the global climate. Arctic ecosystems store large amounts of organic carbon in plants and soil. Uptake of carbon by arctic plants is strongly limited by their access to nutrients, especially nitrogen, due to competition by microbes. Year-round carbon and nitrogen balances thus depend on the seasonality of the activities of plant and microbial communities, and their synchronization. In the Arctic, climate change is especially pronounced during autumn, winter and spring, which may cause asynchronies of these processes, leading to increased carbon and nitrogen losses and positive climate feedbacks.

6. Postdoctoral fellow – Molecular epidemiology or biostatistics/ bioinformatics

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

The overall goal of the research project is to identify connections between the prenatal environment, epigenetic alterations and later disease risk, for example risk of developing asthma and allergy. One of the aims is to develop a predictive model to be used for early identification of high risk children. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to develop independent research ideas, within the scope of the project. For example through collaboration with international cohorts and consortia.

7. Postdoctoral position (2 years) in Aquatic Ecology – Environmental drivers of fish top consumer growth, production and size structure

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the international research project “Holistic evaluation and restoration measures of human impacts on freshwater ecosystems across biogeographical gradients (FreshRestore)”, co-funded by the European Commission (https://www.biodiversa.org/1587) and Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Globally, lake ecosystems are under anthropogenic stress (e.g. climate change, land use and fishing). A key challenge is to understand and predict how freshwaters over gradients of catchments respond to different stressors, and to gain knowledge how to preserve and restore these ecosystems. FreshRestore will develop integrative models to predict population and food web levels consequences of natural environmental drivers and anthropogenic stressors using ecological population- and statistical models and large data sets of lake abiotic parameters, fish communities and food webs across biogeographical gradients in Fennoscandia, combined with information on climate, land- and water-use, and mitigation efforts (e.g., habitat restorations).

8. Postdoc position in Socially Aware AI with focus on engineering social simulations

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

For our department characterized by world-leading research in several scientific fields and a multitude of educations ranked highly in international comparison we now look for a Postdoc in social simulations of organizations in extreme contexts (such as pandemics, terrorist attacks, mountaineering, etc.). The department has been growing rapidly in recent years where focus on an inclusive and bottom-up driven environment are key elements in our sustainable growth. Our workplace consists of a diverse group from different nationalities, background and fields. If you work as a postdoc with us you receive the benefits of support in career development, networking, administrative and technical support functions along with good employment conditions.

9. Postdoc, Business Administration, Artificial Intelligence, extreme context.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

The postdoc position is based at the Department of Business administration, specifically at the management section and the research environment “Extreme Environments – Everyday Decisions (www.TripleED.com)”. We offer an interdisciplinary, internationally competitive research environment interested in extreme contexts – settings where people risk getting hurt or killed (see Hällgren et al, 2018 for a more precise definition and description). More precisely, TripleED explores organizational routines, leadership, and group and organizing processes in such settings. Examples of research projects in which an applicant may contribute include but are not limited to the response to Covid-19 among organizations critical to society’s resilience, decision making in avalanche terrain, commercialization of risk in extreme sports, and behaviors in Doomsday scenarios. A common denominator across the projects is a context-sensitivity to the phenomena that is researched.
