1. PhD Programs in Computational Omics and Systems Biology
Summary of PhD Positions:
Sven Degroeve leads a team of Machine Learning researchers as part of the VIB Computational Omics and Systems Biology Group (CompOmics). With a focus on modelling the behavior of molecules in state-of-the-art biotechnologies (such as Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) using deep neural architectures, the team recently expanded its interests to pre-trained full protein sequence, end-to-end models.

2. PhD Programs in membrane-remodeling protein complexes
Summary of PhD Positions:
A fully funded 4-year Ph.D. position is available in the laboratory “Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins” at the VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology, Brussels, Belgium. The project focuses on the structural elucidation of membrane-remodeling protein complexes from the endoplasmic reticulum and integrates fundamental cell biology and structural biology by cryo-electron microscopy.
The asymmetrical distribution of lipids in biological membranes is a well-established biological paradigm and essential for signaling and organelle-/protein trafficking. While the regulated asymmetry in the plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells is well-studied, much less is known about the symmetry or asymmetry of lipid bilayers in intracellular organelles.

3. PhD Programs in De Novo Design of Transmembrane Fluorescent Proteins
Summary of PhD Positions:
A fully-funded 4-years Ph.D. position is available at the laboratory of protein design at the VIB-Vrije Universiteit Brussel Center for Structural Biology, Belgium. The project is interdisciplinary (computational/experimental lab work). The broad aim is the design and experimental characterization of fluorescent membrane proteins using the Rosetta Molecular Modeling software.
The broad goal of our research group is to apply a de novo protein design approach to study membrane protein folding and function. By establishing a feedback loop between computational design and experimental validation, we aim to develop robust computational methods for the design of membrane proteins (MPs) with tailored properties and functions.

4. PhD Programs in role of tick salivary proteins in (auto)immune disease
Summary of PhD Positions:
We are interested in the effects of tick derived immunomodulatory proteins on the immune balance and their potential in human disease. This is a joint PhD project between VIB/Hasselt University (BE) and Maastricht University (NL). Our group focuses on the role of specific immune cells in this process, in particular on the interplay of anti-inflammatory CD4+ regulatory T cells and pro-inflammatory CD4+ effector T cells.
Here, our major interest lies in the understanding of the processes that lead to autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis or are related to metabolic- and cardiovascular diseases and cancer (for overview: Müller et al., Nat Rev Immunol 2019, Arroyo Hornero et al., Front. Immunol. 2020). To study these processes, we use a translational approach, combining the analysis of human samples and the use of experimental model systems by various immunological, microbiological and molecular biology state-of-the-art techniques.

5. PhD Programs in biology of RAS-driven disease
Summary of PhD Positions:
Applications are invited for a Ph.D. student position in the lab of Anna Sablina at VIB-KULeuven Center for Cancer Biology in Leuven, Belgium. The Anna Sablina group is a pioneer in the investigation of cooperative interactions promoting human disease. To achieve this, we have taken a multi-faceted approach by combining mouse modelling with comprehensive CRISPR-based techniques and multi-omics approaches. The results of our studies have been published in multiple high-profile journals including Science, Cancer Cell, and Nature Cell Biology.

6. PhD Programs in genetic risk factors in diabetes
Summary of PhD Positions:
The lab of Prof. Alsafar has a strong focus on the identification of genetic risk factors in diabetes, oncology, and vascular diseases. The research of Prof. Peter Carmeliet focuses on the development of blood vessels (angiogenesis) and vascular heterogeneity in health and disease, with the aim to identify novel therapeutic pro- and anti-angiogenic strategies.

7. PhD Programs in Angiogenesis and Vascular Heterogeneity
Summary of PhD Positions:
The laboratory of Professor Peter Carmeliet is part of the Center for Cancer Biology (CCB), one of the research departments of VIB (Flanders Institute for Biotechnology) located at the KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium. The lab is focusing on unraveling the molecular and cellular basis of the formation of blood vessels (angiogenesis) in health and disease, and in particular the role of vascular metabolism and vascular heterogeneity herein, with the ultimate goal to identify novel therapeutic pro- or anti-angiogenic strategies.

8. PhD Programs in neural circuits of sensory selection
Summary of PhD Positions:
We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD student to study neural circuits of sensory selection in the mouse cortex and thalamus. At any moment, we are exposed to a multitude of sensory inputs, and our brain filters this information and processes only a small portion of it that is relevant to us. The appropriate sensory selection is also relevant in a clinical context such as autism spectrum disorders This selective processing of information is suggested to arise via the coordinated activity of multiple regions of the cortex. In this project, we aim to reveal neural pathways involved in the sensory selection. We will apply advanced brain imaging and genetic circuit tracing tools in a well-controlled multisensory behavioural assay.

9. 02 PhD Programs in Plant Regeneration
Summary of PhD Positions:
Plants possess an unparalleled regeneration capacity, allowing them to survive severe stress conditions such as injury, herbivory attack, and dramatic weather conditions. Previously, we have identified within Arabidopsis thaliana key molecular components that control stem cell replenishment following cell death (1-5). In follow-up work, we aim to understand the pathways operating upstream and use this knowledge to increase the regeneration potential of difficult-to-propagate tree species. This project is financed by an ERC-Adv grant.

10. PhD Programs in the role of TDP-43 aggregation in Neurodegeneration
Summary of PhD Positions:
TDP-43 aggregation is the major hallmark of nearly all amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) forms and half of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) cases. Two leading labs are teaming up and combining their expertise to decipher the molecular underpinnings of TDP-43 aggregation. The Da Cruz lab has innovative cellular systems that recapitulate human TDP-43 pathology as seen in patients and the SWITCH lab has unraveled the importance of heterotypic interactions in amyloid proteins. These tools will be powerfully combined in this project to investigate specific (heterotypic) interactions between the aggregation-prone regions of TDP-43 and the background proteome and to determine which cells are most sensitive to TDP-43 aggregation.
