1. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Sensory, Rheology and Juiciness of next-generation meat analogues

Summary of PhD Program:

You will elucidate juiciness by investigating the liquid flow in PBMAs. We will investigate how serum binding and release are linked to the pore size distribution and how to quantify and control the juiciness by tuning the porosity. The flow in the porous structure of PBMA is directly linked to mechanical response (rheology) and juiciness, which will be investigated via normal force measurement and flow visualization, and linked to the microscopic and the sensory analysis as studied in the other PhD-projects. The results will be compared with theoretical modes and provides essential input for designing a new generation of healthy and juicy meat alternatives.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in land change monitoring for tree diversity

Summary of PhD Program:

The Laboratory of Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing (GRS) and Plan Ecology and Nature Conservation Group at Wageningen University are jointly looking for an aspiring PhD to explore the potential of land change monitoring in understanding the causes and consequences of tree diversity changes. We start investigating the relationship between vegetation dynamics and the species composition of tree communities at a large scale using remote sensing, before assessing anthropogenic and natural drivers of tree species diversity, functional diversity and ecosystem resilience.

3. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in NanoNU-Marker: Nano-Chemical Biomarkers for Ageing and Neurodegeneration

Summary of PhD Program:

You will work closely together with the other PhD and develop, combine and apply innovative emerging microfluidics, nano-chemical, and digital technologies. Purpose is to unravel the molecular links between protein aggregation, nutrition/lifestyle, and the onset and progression of cognitive ageing and neurodegenerative disease in older adults. These methods will be applied to study human biofluids as a nano-chemical fingerprint of patients’ nutritional and life-style behavior, to identify nano-chemical biomarkers of Healthy Cognitive Ageing (PhD position 1) and Subjective Cognitive Decline (PhD position 2)

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Individual and collective decision making to reduce pollution from chemical inputs

Summary of PhD Program:

The Business Economics Group at Wageningen University is looking for a PhD student to contribute to their research on effective approaches for mitigating risks to the environment from chemical inputs. The successful candidate will investigate chemical input decision-making processes of farmers, with a focus on both individual and collective approaches, such as environmental cooperatives.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microbiota and CRC treatment

Summary of PhD Program:

Colorectal cancer survivors often suffer from treatment-related side-effects impacting their quality of life. Current adjuvant care involves chemotherapeutic management with the drugs oxaliplatin and capecitabine. However, determinants of chemotherapy-induced toxicities are unclear. Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiota disturbances may play a role. Although dietary fibre is a known determinant of gut health, the impact of dietary fibre on management of chemotherapy side-effects remains unexplored.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aquifer Treatment for Sustainable Drinking Water Supply

Summary of PhD Program:

River bank filtration (RBF) is a widely used nature-based technique to produce drinking water from surface water. Energy intensive post-treatment is often required, because pollutants are not always reliably removed. In the AQUIPURA project, we want to investigate pollutant removal in RBFs in its entirety ranging from organic micro-pollutants to viruses. AQUIPURA develops and employs novel mechanistic insights, monitoring, and modelling tools. AQUIPURA improves design and performance resulting in improved reliability of a contaminant-free, safe, green RBF system in times of urbanization and climate-change. AQUIPURA shares outcomes and knowledge in a Chinese-Dutch transdisciplinary consortium to assist in achieving a green nature-based, climate resilient drinking water supply.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Empowering optimal design for greater resilience of the electricity grid

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, a resilience assessment framework for electricity grids will first be developed, building on resilience theory and interdisciplinary methods in ecology and economics (e.g., the five Ws). Since energy systems can be modeled as networked systems, we will employ spatial and network analysis; where nodes represent components like substations and consumers, edges represent connections between them such as transmission lines, and network metrics can be used to identify critical components in the systems. Network failure or simulated attacks on nodes/edges could allow to prevent disruptions and identify potential vulnerabilities. A digital-twin approach will be employed to simulate various scenarios, including for example, peak load, component failures, attacks, and renewable energy fluctuations.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ex situ and in situ quantification of structure-functional relationships in texturized novel protein sources

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project will take place at the Laboratory of Biophysics (BIP) and Food Quality and Design group (FQD) at WUR, and it aims at experimentally characterizing the extrusion-driven formation of complex food matrices based on protein-rich materials, both traditional and novel. As a PhD candidate, you will systematically explore how structure/texture formation in protein extrudates, produced with novel food sources alternative to animal proteins, is affected by the degree of pre-processing, the ratio of novel and traditional food ingredients, as well as by extrusion conditions.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Diet, faecal microbiota and chemotherapy in patients with colon cancer

Summary of PhD Program:

Colorectal cancer patients often suffer from treatment-related side-effects impacting their quality of life. Current adjuvant care involves chemotherapeutic management with the drugs oxaliplatin and capecitabine. However, determinants of chemotherapy-induced toxicities are unclear. Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiota disturbances may play a role. Although dietary fibre is a known determinant of gut health, the impact of dietary fibre on management of chemotherapy-induced side-effects remains unexplored. Therefore, we started the GEM-CARE project. GEM-CARE stands for: Gut Ecology Management for Cancer treatment and Recovery Enhancement. In this 4-year project, we will investigate the potential of dietary fibre in mitigating chemotherapy-induced side-effects in individuals with colorectal cancer.
