1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sea Ice in the Arctic Climate System

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD candidate, you will investigate how Arctic sea ice is changing and what role ocean warming – also known as Arctic Atlantification – plays in this process. You will use satellite observations, climate reanalysis data, and numerical models to better understand how sea ice is transported out of the Arctic and how heat is exchanged between the ocean, ice, and atmosphere.

Application Deadline: 28 August 2025

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Benthic Microalgae and Blue Carbon Burial

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will examine the role of microphytobenthos (MPB) in facilitating the retention and transformation of seagrass-exuded DOM and POM into mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM), a process which can facilitate long-term carbon storage. Thus, MPB may enhance MAOM formation via modifications to sedimentary redox reactions and sediment stabilisation, providing microenvironments favorable for organic matter preservation.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multiscale Mechanistic Modelling of Animal Development

Summary of PhD Program:

The project will consist of creating models at various levels (subcellular, cell-level, organ-level). At the subcellular level, you will develop models of protein interactions using ordinary differential equations. In a second step, these can be integrated with cell based models to investigate feedbacks between subcellular networks and cell shape regulation. One potential direction of the project is to then investigate how the virtual cells interact to shape an entire simulated organ.

Application Deadline: 6 July 2025

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in past, present and future global inland-water methane budget

Summary of PhD Program:

Inland waters function as active biogeochemical reactors for the production, consumption, transport and emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. Methane is the second most important anthropogenic greenhouse gas contributing to global warming today. However, current estimates of methane emissions from inland waters to the atmosphere are highly uncertain because of limitations in long-term observational data and modelling methodology.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Logics for Multi-Agent Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

This position offers excellent opportunities for professional growth. You will take part in the activities of the ELSA lab, as well as attend international summer schools and workshops to strengthen your research expertise and expand your network. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to contribute to teaching and supervise AI-related thesis projects at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels (approximately 10-15% of your time). You will be part of the Intelligent Systems group, led by Professor Mehdi Dastani, who will also be your supervisor together with Dr. Dragan Doder.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Transnational Retirement across the United Kingdom and India

Summary of PhD Program:

You will study retired individuals and those approaching retirement, their families, and relevant national and local stakeholders through transnational multi-sited fieldwork (UK and India) and a combination of qualitative methodological approaches. Within this framework, there is scope to tailor the PhD project to your interests and strengths. You will be part of a team researching the complexity and inequalities of transnational (pre-)retirement trajectories across three migration corridors – Portugal-Brazil, Netherlands-Turkey, and UK-India.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Transnational Retirement across the Netherlands and Turkey

Summary of PhD Program:

Utrecht University invites applications for a PhD research position at the Faculty of Geosciences that will investigate transnational retirement trajectories between the Netherlands and Turkey. The candidate will be part of the ERC-funded project ‘Retirement across countries: A tripartite analysis of the welfare state, family care networks, and the retirement industry (RETIREWEL).’ RETIREWEL is a comparative qualitative research project led by Dr Dora Sampaio, Assistant Professor at the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Algebraic Geometry

Summary of PhD Program:

You will join a research group in algebraic geometry, working on a project focusing on noncommutative algebraic geometry. This project aims to find novel constructions of noncommutative surfaces, understand their properties, and try to generalise these constructions to higher dimensions. You will be embedded in the research group of Pieter Belmans and, more broadly, in the Utrecht Geometry Centre, a vibrant research hub with many activities like seminars, working groups, and conferences. The wider algebraic geometry landscape in the Netherlands is also highly active.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Climate- and Energy Drought-Resilient Energy System Decarbonisation

Summary of PhD Program:

The rapid decarbonisation of the energy system requires the large-scale expansion of renewable energy sources for electricity generation, coupled with the electrification of end-use sectors such as space heating and cooling. It is projected that by 2050, approximately 80% of the global electricity supply will come from variable renewable energy (VRE) sources like wind, solar, and hydropower to meet the 1.5–2°C Paris Agreement target. However, the increasing reliance on VRE in decarbonised energy systems exposes both supply and demand to greater vulnerability from variable and uncertain weather conditions.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in reconstructing early to middle Eocene climate variability

Summary of PhD Program:

Changes in regional temperature and hydrology are among the greatest threats associated with modern global warming. Temperature is an important control on hydrology. The latter will determine water supply, food security and sanitation to human communities. The paradigm is that wet regions become wetter and dry regions become drier with global warming. However, particularly in the vulnerable subtropical and mid-latitude regions, the state-of-the-art climate models produce simulations that differ not only in the magnitude, but even in the sign of change.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Social Entrepreneurship

Summary of PhD Program:

This is a full-time PhD position dedicated to research linked to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). Over a period of four years, you will conduct doctoral research and contribute to advancing the field of entrepreneurship, with a particular focus on social entrepreneurship. You will have the opportunity to develop research skills, collaborate with expert academics and societal partners, and pursue a PhD degree in a dynamic academic environment.
