1. Multiple Fully Funded PhD Position in Health and Biosciences

Summary of PhD Program:

We are now looking for applicants for Multiple short-term doctoral researcher positions in the Health and Biosciences doctoral programme (HBS-DP) of the University of Oulu. The positions are fully funded by the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) and by the research units.

HBS-DP funds doctoral research in the following doctoral degree programmes: medicine, biochemistry and molecular medicine, dentistry, and health sciences. In the current call, short-term doctoral researcher positions ranging from 3 to 6 months will be available for the year 2025 (up to 5 person-years in total). These doctoral researcher positions are primarily intended for doctoral researchers working as professionals in healthcare with the degree of Licentiate of Medicine, Licentiate of Dentistry or Master of Health Sciences. The positions are fixed-term for 3 to 6 months starting earliest on 1.1.2025 and ending at the latest on 31.12.2025.

2. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Vision and Signal Analysis, in Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS)

Summary of PhD Program:

We are now looking for Three one-year Postdoctoral Researchers or Doctoral Researchers for the Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis Research Unit (CMVS), to work on new machine learning methods for the following positions:

1) Video-based eye tracking and visual speech recognition (with Docent Dr. Xiaobai Li and Prof. Guoying Zhao) or
2) Mutual gaze and/or facial expression estimation from video (Joint position with Turku University, with Prof. Zhao and Prof. Leppänen);
3) 4D facial (micro-) expression recognition and generation (with Prof. Guoying Zhao).

The main research interests of CMVS are in computer vision and machine learning, affective computing, multimodal image and signal analysis, low-energy computing, and applications in affective human-computer interaction, biometrics, augmented reality, and biomedicine. In physiological signal analysis, basic, applied, and translational research in biomedical engineering is carried out to tackle key challenges of next-generation personalized medicine and wellness solutions. In its field, the Research Unit is globally highly ranked, and research activities are based on international collaborations.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Process Metallurgy (reduction of chromite)

Summary of PhD Program:

The doctoral researcher will work in the Towards Carbon Neutral Metals 2 (TOCANEM 2) project, a large consortium project targeted at reducing the CO2 emissions of stainless steel and non-ferrous metals production. As part of the TOCANEM 2 project, the doctoral researcher will be studying the reduction of chromite ore to produce ferrochrome. More specifically, the doctoral researcher will study experimentally the pre-reduction of chromite with gaseous reductants and hydrogen plasma smelting reduction of the pre-reduced material using laboratory-scale furnaces. The results will be characterized using typical metallographic methods with supporting optical emissions spectroscopy measurements from the plasma.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Process Metallurgy (solidification of steel)

Summary of PhD Program:

The doctoral researcher will work in the Towards Carbon Neutral Metals 2 (TOCANEM 2) project, a large consortium project targeted at reducing the CO2 emissions of stainless steel and non-ferrous metals production. As part of the TOCANEM 2 project, the doctoral researcher will be working on developing thermodynamic descriptions for the solidification of highly alloyed stainless steels. The aim is to develop an in-house database that can be used as part of solidification software (IDS) and computational thermodynamics software (Thermo-Calc, FactSage). The work includes thermodynamic assessments and laboratory scale experiments in collaboration with national and international partners.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in field of dissolution-precipitation chemistry of inorganic side streams and cements

Summary of PhD Program:

The position is part of Research Council of Finland project Advanced modification and characterization of the mineral residue surface-liquid interface (MINSURF). The project is related to the development of new low-CO2 cements and utilization of inorganic silicate side streams. Your research will concentrate on dissolution-precipitation chemistry of silicate materials, metal-ligand complex formation reactions, and thermodynamic modelling. Your task will be to carry out multidisciplinary research with state-of-the art analytical techniques, including laboratory work, inorganic material analyses, and development of new experimental setups for dissolution-precipitation and surface chemistry investigations related to cements. You will carry out research work within a research team and publish research results in leading international scientific journals.
