1. Fully Funded PhD Position in How do changing environmental conditions impact insect energy budgets?

Summary of PhD Program:

We are a multi-disciplinary team (including behavioural biologists and physiologists) working on UKRI (BBSRC) funded project that is aiming to understand and predict the effects of the thermo-nutritional developmental environment upon the life history of two key UK wild bee species, and the consequent implications for pollination services. We are now inviting applications for a fully-funded, full time PhD studentship aimed at developing state-of-the-art predictions of how environmental variables affect the energy budgets and life histories of two key pollinators for UK crops – bumblebees and mason bees.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Using animal psychology to promote pro-environmental attitudes and enhance wider Ocean Literacy

Summary of PhD Program:

Biodiversity loss is inextricably linked to declining human-nature “connectedness”, particularly in terms of how people form attitudes and beliefs about the natural world. Anthropomorphism, or attributing human-like qualities to non-human beings, is an increasingly common conservation strategy to encourage human connectedness to wildlife, but such strategies may also contribute to species’ persecution (e.g., “bold” and “cunning” predators). The public often ascribes psychological abilities to wildlife, but there have been limited efforts to link public wildlife attitudes to actual animal psychology research.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Seawalls as Habitats – Engaging Communities in Ocean Citizen Science

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD will collaboratively build citizen science approaches to investigate the effectiveness of “Ecological Enhancement” on coastal defence structures by working with citizen scientists to identify and monitor species. Communities will co-create ecological investigations, using their findings to recommend simple, low-cost engineering solutions (e.g. rock pool creation and adding texture to structures) to enhance coastal biodiversity. These non-formal learning activities (i.e. experiential) are reported as effective for encouraging pro-environmental behaviour among adults, yet evaluation is limited.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microplastics and Ocean Literacy

Summary of PhD Program:

Ocean plastic pollution has received increasing interest from the media, NGO and scientific community. Many initiatives have focused on individual action for behaviour change following public awareness raising campaigns, and have followed traditional, but limited, “Knowledge Deficit” models, relying on dissemination of scientific fact to provide motivation for pro-environmental behaviours. Exposure of human communities to plastic pollution could potentially result in greater custodianship and efforts to protect and restore ocean ecosystems, but how this relates to Ocean Literacy is little studied. The Mekong basin as a global hotspot for plastic pollution flows into the ocean and limited community resource for waste processing is a potential case study for this PhD.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cultural Geographies of Ocean Literate Citizens

Summary of PhD Program:

Ocean Literacy is understanding our individual and collective impact on the ocean, and how the ocean in turn impacts our lives and wellbeing. Diverse historical and cultural contexts provide examples of communities that are deeply engaged with the ocean. Engaging these perspectives to enrich the Ocean Literacy concept beyond an understanding of marine science is critically needed to promote inclusivity in the current dialogue, amplify marginalised voices and transform our collective awareness of the human-ocean relationship.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Identification of Host Cell Factors to Improve Viral Vector-based Gene Therapy Production

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this PhD project is to shed light on the biology of gene therapy vector production in these cells, providing novel solutions to optimise manufacturing. With current manufacturing processes only 1 in 100000 produced viruses are functional, which is far less efficient than naturally occurring versions. However, we don’t understand what causes this issue. Gaining insights into virus assembly and egress mechanisms in the production context will provide a unique opportunity to improve manufacturing, reduce therapeutic costs and therefore increase global availability.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in High-value Chemical Production From Waste Cellulose

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD in biochemistry will focus on a novel solution combining cellulose economically purified from waste lignocellulose by our industrial partner Lixea with our cost-effective microbial high-value chemical production. Our multidisciplinary supervisory team brings together Microbiology, Chemical Engineering and circular economy to create industrial symbiosis towards a circular bioeconomy. We will perform Techno-Economic Assessment and Life Cycle Analysis to evaluate the commercial viability and sustainability claims of our technology and develop to Technology Readiness Level 4 to pursue commercialisation.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing and Testing a Psychosocial Intervention

Summary of PhD Program:

Prostate cancer affects one in four Black men and is now regarded as a couple’s disease because men and their partners experience significant psychological and emotional distress after diagnosis and treatment. Although open communication can promote shared problem-solving and better psychosocial well-being for couples, this is challenging for Black men and their partners due to cultural, structural and language barriers. To date, no intervention exists to address these barriers within the Black cultural context. This novel PhD will address this gap in the evidence base by developing and testing an intervention to promote open communication for mutual problem-solving among Black men diagnosed with prostate cancer and their partners in the United Kingdom.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Fluid Dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

The topic of your PhD will be gravity currents. Gravity currents are fluid flows along a horizontal boundary driven by a density difference between two regions of fluid, for example a salt water current spreading underneath a fresh water ambient is a classic experiment (see video). These currents exist in buildings as ventilation flows, in industry as spillages of toxic gas, and in the environment as cold fronts, powder snow avalanches, and turbidity currents, to give a few examples.
