Summary of PhD Program:
DNA methylation is an important epigenetic modification with fundamental roles in gene regulation and transposable element silencing. In plants, aberrant DNA methylation changes (i.e. epimutations) can arise stochastically, similar to DNA sequence mutations. These epimutations are often transmitted across generations and accumulate in plant genomes over time. Our group is generally interested in understanding the role of epimutations in plant evolution and their potential in agricultural breeding. We tackle this question via a number of novel experimental systems coupled with next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics and computational approaches.

Summary of PhD Program:
Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks in the world with corresponding economic importance. It is prepared by extracting aromatic substances from a particle pack of roasted and ground coffee beans. Extraction from flow-through particle packs can also be found in many other applications in process engineering. What these processes have in common is that they can be viewed as a superposition of a flow through a particle pack and a mass transport problem. The question of the optimal design of coffee extraction in order to achieve quality specifications for the respective process as efficiently and effectively as possible is being addressed as part of a larger cooperation project. Both experimental investigations and, above all, mathematical models are used as tools.

The economic performance and stability of modern society depend on the reliability and durability of reinforced concrete structures, a fundamental component of our built world. Therefore, maintenance of infrastructure remains one of the primary core tasks of infrastructure management. If damage at an early stage is detected and precautionary measures are applied, maintenance costs can be significantly reduced, and lives can be saved by preempting failure. To this end, we are currently developing a cutting-edge ultrasonic wave-based technology for detecting damage in concrete structures. The goal of this project is to use methods of artificial intelligence (AI) to extract valuable information from diffuse ultrasonic waves to detect early-stage damage in concrete.
