1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Biomedical Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
As a PhD candidate on the Dutch Heart Foundation-funded ELECSUR project, you will be at the forefront of using novel techniques to characterize the electrical substrate of the heart in patients who have suffered a heart attack. Your main responsibility will be to acquire, process, and analyze high-resolution cardiac electrical data using electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) and advanced ECG analysis techniques. You will work within a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, biomedical engineers, and computer scientists at Maastricht University Medical Center+, collaborating closely with our (inter)national partners. You will have the opportunity for an extended stay with our international collaborators.
Application Deadline: 6-10-2024
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cardiology
Summary of PhD Program:
Heart failure (HF) is a prevalent clinical syndrome with diverse phenotypes. HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for over 50% of HF diagnoses. Despite its increasing incidence, HFpEF lacks targeted treatments. Pacing to modify resting heart rate (HR) has shown promising therapeutic potential for this complex patient population.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in BIOPYRANIA: Developing polybenzimidazoles with new bio-based aromatic monomers
Summary of PhD Program:
BIOPYRANIA offers an innovative solution by utilising new bio-based aromatic monomers, which are obtained through fermentative processes from European second-generation woody biomass. Expanding on previous studies of polyesters based on these new bio-based aromatic monomers at Maastricht University, BIOPYRANIA shows that incorporating these building blocks into materials results in distinctive properties. Leveraging these properties, the project aims to develop sustainable polyamide (PA) and polybenzimidazole (PBI) polymers for high-performance applications in automotive electrification and green hydrogen production.
Application Deadline: 31-12-2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in synthesis and evaluation of biobased covalent adaptable networks (project SusInkCoat)
Summary of PhD Program:
Plastics have their drawbacks: their production consumes energy and leads to greenhouse gas emissions; they are made from non-sustainable materials; they do not decompose; and less than 10% are recycled. Much progress has been made in making plastics more sustainable for larger applications. However, thin films, such as those used in coatings and inks, are lagging behind. The SusInkCoat project is changing that. Researchers are developing new materials, processes and applications to improve the durability, functionality and recyclability of coatings, thin films and inks. In addition, the consortium is training a new generation of chemical developers for whom sustainability and circularity are core values.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in LLMs and Marketing Insights
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project leverages Language Models (LLMs) and social media data to conduct trend analysis, sentiment analysis, and integrate insights into executive data-driven decision-making models and dashboards in near real-time. It aims to explore consumer trends in the specified focus area using this integrated approach, utilizing the consumer’s voice as an early warning system. The project seeks to establish a swift data flow for R&D, quality, and other teams to implement actionable measures.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mass Spectrometry Imaging
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project aims to develop a new fast mass microscopy instrument and corresponding sample analysis and preparation methods to push the boundaries of MSI throughput. Novel development of mass spectrometry instrumentation, including computer simulation and modeling, ion optics, electrical and vacuum systems, and instrument control software will be a part of this PhD project. This project will require communication with both users of MSI technology as well as collaboration and consultation with those users and an external commercial partner.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Harnessing heterosis in Pea (Pisum sativum) for sustainable, alternative protein
Summary of PhD Program:
The research will focus on the observation that the offspring of genetically different parents often have better yield and quality traits than either parent itself. One aim of the research is to understand the genetics that regulate these traits so that they can be used in traditional line breeding. A second aim is to explore the possibilities and assess the value of producing hybrid pea seed at large-scale.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
We seek an enthusiastic PhD researcher with an excellent record of accomplishment to develop and test novel supramolecular biomaterials for creating responsive and dynamic bioinks in tissue engineering application. The candidate will engage in research related to the formulation and use of supramolecular and dynamic hydrogels as printable and patternable materials for cell culture, focusing on vascular and osteochondral application. This position is part of a team focusing on applying such hydrogel systems to the creation of controllable 3D environments for tissue engineering on applications from vascularization and osteochondral regeneration, to the creation of living materials with a bacterial/yeast component.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in the history of biological fieldwork and gender
Summary of PhD Program:
The candidate will combine approaches from the history of science, Science and Technology Studies (STS), gender studies and postcolonial history to study the formal and informal relationships between women biologists working in different field sites. In the second half of the 20th century, Asian and African national parks experienced a gradual, yet unprecedented inflow of women researchers with their own credentials. Besides a handful well-known primatologists, this generation of women researchers, their networks, and their contributions to research and conservation projects and practices in remote and often colonized or formerly colonized landscapes, remains under-researched in the history of science. Yet, studying these networks can give important insights into mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion in the making of environmental knowledge and its local embeddedness.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Impact of artistic communication tools on AMR and infection prevention in disability care
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a PhD candidate who wants to develop as a transdisciplinary researcher for an exciting participatory research project in residential care centres for people with mild intellectual disabilities. Together with residents, professionals, artists and graphic designers, we will design, implement and evaluate new visual materials to improve infection prevention and thus limit the spread of AMR. As a PhD candidate, you are primarily responsible for conducting participatory research, jointly developing materials and testing them in the practices of the residential care centres and conceptualising this new approach. This means sensitive fieldwork in the daily practice of two residential care centres and maintaining good contacts with all those involved in the practice, but also reflecting on the research activities and conceptualising the insights we gain.
