Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Immuno-biology and Infectious disease

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project investigates the potential of targeting host-cell metabolism to deprive intracellular bacteria of essential nutrients and boost the immune response. The candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to help characterize how pathogenic mycobacteria rewire host-cell metabolism and identify novel drug targets.

Application Deadline: 1 November 2025

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in understanding and designing nanomedicines-membranes interaction: physics based approach

Summary of PhD Program:

Nanomedicines have achieved tremendous successes in the treatment of and vaccination against a range of debilitating diseases. However, one of the key challenges that remains is to deliver the nanomedicines with high specificity to the desired target site in the body. In this PhD project, the candidate will experimentally study how to achieve high specificity by developing a quantitative understanding of the interactions between the nanomedicine and cellular membranes.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human-Centered Interpretable Machine Learning

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, the researcher will develop theory and algorithms for (hybrid) model selection that allows to exploit domain knowledge through interactive learning. For this we will build on the minimum description length (MDL) principle and interpretable machine learning approaches. The resulting methods will be evaluated on real-world case studies in health care, to demonstrate the potential to discover novel insights from data.

Application Deadline: 14 October 2025

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in systems with noisy coefficients

Summary of PhD Program:

Applications are invited for a 4-year PhD position with Hermen Jan Hupkes at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Leiden, as part of the project `Patterns in Random Media’. The PhD position focuses on the dynamical behaviour of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). In particular, we will consider the impact that noise terms have on patterns such as travelling waves, spirals and spots.
