1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Fibromyalgia

Summary of PhD Program:

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex long-term condition affecting up to 5.4% of the UK population. It is associated with chronic pain, fatigue, sleep problems and concentration difficulties. FM guidelines recommend exercise and self-management as a core treatment of FM symptoms. However, the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions often depends on the level of engagement and adherence. A recent feasibility randomised controlled trial (RCT) testing the effectiveness of a self-management intervention for adults in a community setting found that overall attrition to the intervention was high. The qualitative findings showed that participants’ activation and readiness to change influenced their engagement.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Prescribing in community pharmacy in England

Summary of PhD Program:

There are currently more than 13,000 prescribing pharmacists, representing over 22% of the pharmacists in the UK. The majority of those are registered in England. There is a strong drive to ensure that all pharmacists are “prescribing-ready” by the time they complete their pharmacy training. However, the development of new clinical services involving prescribing in community pharmacy has not caught up with the pace of training community pharmacists to become independent prescribers. Many community pharmacists who become independent prescribers struggle to use their prescribing skills to deliver NHS services.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in The effect of COVID-19 on lower urinary tract function

Summary of PhD Program:

This studentship will focus on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS; comprising urinary urgency, frequency and nocturia) associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. In particular, their trajectory and impact will be measured, through identifying symptomatic and biomarker associations. This study will follow a current, initial symptom survey study that is comparing LUTS between those with and without recent COVID-19 infection.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microplastics and warming waters

Summary of PhD Program:

UK rivers are amongst the most polluted in Europe, with only 14% of English rivers achieving good ecological status and no single river achieving good chemical status. Key sources of pollution have been identified as sewage discharges, agricultural runoff and chemical discharge, all of which include microplastic particles. In addition, it’s well established that climate change is modifying river water temperature. However, even though temperature is known to influence metabolic processes, dissolved oxygen and nitrate concentrations, most research has focused largely on nutrient loading and chemical contaminants with less attention given to the impacts of temperatures or multi-stressor responses.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in panelled sport compression garment

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this project is to investigate if wearing a made to measure SCG offers more benefit (primary objective: performance enhancement. Secondary objective: reduce risk of injury) than an off-the-shelf SCG. The programme of research will provide the successful candidate with an excellent opportunity to develop a wide range of research skills and experiences in preparation for a post-doctoral research journey. The PhD researcher will be based at Glenside/Frenchay campus, UWE Bristol within the Centre for Health and Clinical Research and will have regular visits to Medigarments Ltd. The researcher will be expected to directly engage with relevant healthcare professionals and sports professionals.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Shaping healthy urban environments

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD will take a highly interdisciplinary, systems approach to the prevailing increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), working across the fields of psychology, urban planning, anthropology, biology, ecology, and computational neuroscience. As part of this doctorate, novel environmental metrics will be generated from existing, large-scale datasets to advance an index of urban health; computational models will be developed to help predict the trajectories of health given particular conditions; in addition, primary research will be undertaken using anthropological methods of inquiry to better understand the lived experiences of illness in urban environments.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ambulance staff assessment of pain in people living with dementia

Summary of PhD Program:

Pain assessments for people with dementia who are in hospital or a care home often rely on reports from carers or on repeated observations over a period of time. This is difficult for ambulance staff because they are not with the patient for very long, often don’t have access to medical records and need to make decisions quickly. There are 30-40 pain assessment tools for use with people with dementia that have been published in the literature. However, only two of these are potentially suitable for ambulance patients; the others are more suitable to use with people living in care homes or patients staying in hospital. There are no pain assessment tools specifically designed for the ambulance service.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Autonomous Navigation For Mobile Robot In The Dynamic Environment

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD studentship will focus on indoor localization, navigation, and obstacle avoidance for mobile robots by development of novel and better ways to detect the changes of the environment in real time. The update of path planning according to these environmental changes must meet the requirements of transportation tasks, with high precision and specified speed. The envisaged research will be demonstrated and evaluated in a challenging and dynamic environment to test whether the designed mobile robot can complete the specified tasks within the given time, such as goods transportation, under different types of task scenarios.
