1. Fully Funded PhD Position in IC Design group
Summary of PhD Program:
Professor Bram Nauta’s Integrated Circuit Design (ICD) group focuses on various aspects of analog and Radio Frequency (RF) Integrated Circuits (IC). The group’s motto is “fundamental solutions for practical problems” and under this vision, it has contributed many fundamental new ideas in circuit design. The IC Design group has made high-impact inventions in analog filters, thermal noise cancelling amplifiers, ultra-low power analog to digital converters, software-defined radio, mixer-first receivers, N-path filters and sub-sampling phase locked loops.
Application Deadline: 30 Jun 2025
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in single-molecule protein nano dielectrophoresis
Summary of PhD Program:
We are developing a platform for label-free characterization of single (bio)molecules and nanoparticles, bringing the lab-on-a-chip concept to the ultimate single-molecule resolution. Your research will be focused on the engineering of nanogap electrodes for trapping/actuation of single biomolecules and nanoparticles using inhomogeneous AC electric fields and optical readout from the traps. Are you passionate about this research? The PhD will involve a lot of cleanroom nanofabrication followed by complex optical measurements, so that must be something that you are eager to master and to spend time on (in the cleanroom and optics lab).
Application Deadline: 14 Feb 2025

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Healthcare Transformation
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and curious PhD candidate to join our innovative Industrial Engineering & Business Information Systems (IEBIS) section at the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences. In this dynamic and inclusive section, personal and professional development is central, and there is plenty of room for social activities. This position allows you to contribute towards a future-proof healthcare system with a special focus on accessibility, availability, and quality of care.
Application Deadline: 1 Mar 2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Modelling the behaviour of river bed dynamics
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will focus on designing river engineering measures inspired by natural river processes to mitigate spatial-temporal changes in the river bed, reducing intervention needs while fostering resilient river ecosystems. Currently, maintenance activities such as dredging of river dunes or infilling of scour holes are necessary to maintain navigability during low flows and mitigate excessive river bed erosion during high flows. However, these maintenance activities can disrupt the aquatic habitats and undermine the river’s natural dynamics.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Practical modeling of coastal nourishments morphodynamics
Summary of PhD Program:
Within the SOURCE program, your project aims to develop models to replicate the complex physics of cross- and alongshore nourishment morphodynamics in a simplified, wave-averaged way. A double model approach will be followed to bridge the gap the morphodynamics of a single nourishments (kms, years) and the large-scale morphodynamics of a complete coastal system (100s of kms, decades). First, a depth-averaged 2DH model (e.g. Delft3D) will be developed, accounting for the dynamic beach-dune coupling.
Application Deadline: 13 Feb 2025
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Intra-wave modeling of coastal nourishment morphodynamics
Summary of PhD Program:
Within the SOURCE program, your project aims to develop a detailed research model to describe intra-wave cross-shore sand transport and morphodynamics (e.g. OpenFoam). This depth-resolving 2DV model will be used to unravel controlling cross-shore sand transport processes at various scales, such as bottom boundary layer processes, vertical turbulence and sand mixing, and effects of wave breaking. The model will be validated using lab and field data, in particular from new wave flume experiments by a fellow SOURCE PhD.
Application Deadline: 3 Mar 2025
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human-Robot Interaction and AI For Health Coaching
Summary of PhD Program:
Healthcare systems are transforming due to demographic changes, economic pressure, and epidemiological shifts, among other factors. This creates a need for innovative and supportive solutions such as (social) robots, chatbots, and intelligent virtual avatars. These technologies can potentially support staff and improve people’s lives by promoting healthier lifestyles, providing patient care, and enhancing rehabilitation outcomes.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environmental Accounting for Nature-Based Solutions in Environmental Policy
Summary of PhD Program:
Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are a key topic in climate policy, but their role, especially in offsetting schemes, remains debated. For instance, bioenergy and tree planting are often treated inconsistently in carbon accounting, highlighting the need for more coherent frameworks. Emerging policies like the EU Carbon Removal Certification Scheme and the Paris Agreement’s Article 6.4 lack clarity on NBS implementation, and efforts like the “Trillion Tree Campaign” have faced criticism for their weak monitoring and diverting attention for much needed reduction of fossil fuel emissions and reducing deforestation.
Application Deadline: 28 Feb 2025
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding the impact of nature-based solutions in small rivers
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project aims to explore the impact of nature-based solutions on small river systems in the Netherlands. Nature-based solutions promote the utilization of natural processes to create a resilient water infrastructure that simultaneously satisfies societal and ecosystem needs. Such nature-based solutions include creating space for water retention and periodic flooding, re-meandering of straightened river sections, removing bank protection, increasing flow resistance by promoting vegetation growth, and installing natural structures such as dead wood, which increases the flow variability and provides habitats for a wide range of species.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Harmonic Losses in Power Transformers
Summary of PhD Program:
The goal of the PhD position is to model, measure and analyze the impact of harmonic losses in power transformers. Your R&D work involves the development of a frequency-dependent analytical model for harmonic losses in power transformers with different core magnetic materials (CRGO steel, amorphous metal core, etc.) and different winding configurations. This model should consider the total losses including the copper (load loss) and core (no-load loss) losses. To verify and improve the modelling, you will build lab-scale transformers and perform extensive systematic experiments on the total harmonic loss of the constructed transformers.
