1. Fully Funded PhD Position in nucleation and growth of magnesium carbonates

Summary of PhD Program:

The doctoral researcher position is for 4 years and a part of Durable Mg-based cement: Toward carbon-negative concrete project funded by the Research Council of Finland. Your research will concentrate on the nucleation and growth of magnesium carbonates and how to steer the phenomena using additives. The work will look into reaction pathways and formation mechanism of magnesium carbonates and apply these insights to produce durable cement based on magnesium carbonate. Your task will be to carry out multidisciplinary research with state-of-the art methods, including both experimental work (chemistry and material synthesis) and thermodynamic modelling.

Application Deadline: 29.Feb.2024

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geotechnical Materials

Summary of PhD Program:

The position is part of EU Horizon Europe project “REESOURCE: Unlocking the supply of rare earth elements in Europe through responsible, sustainable and Decarbonised innovative technologies”. The project is focused on enhancing key technologies of raise mining to foster “invisible mining”, with minimal socioenvironmental impact and lower CO2 emissions. Your research will focus on developing a cementitious binder system from mine tailings, making them suitable for backfilling, and other applications in mine sites and avoiding the need for tailing ponds; valorize the tailings through a Circular Economy approach, to make them suitable for expanded value chains as geopolymers (or other binder systems) for construction applications.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Global Maternal and Child Health

Summary of PhD Program:

As a doctoral or postdoctoral researcher you will coordinate data collection, analyse data and write scientific manuscripts in a global maternal and child health research project conducted in Malawi and Bangladesh. The project is entitled “Small vulnerable newborns and the transgenerational cycle of health and development.” It is a part of the Academy of Finland Development Research Programme. In two low-resource settings, the project assesses novel ideas on how health and child development are transmitted across generations: it studies young women who themselves were born preterm or small for gestational age and assesses their health when they get pregnant and follows the health and development of their children.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in ECM-Hypoxia

Summary of PhD Program:

The current projects aim to study new molecules interacting in hypoxia-signaling and metabolism, especially obesity. Our previous work shows that certain enzymes of the hypoxia pathway may act as central switches that could connect the networks for oxygen and nutrient supply. However, whether, and how, these switching mechanisms work is as yet unknown. This will be investigated in the work of this project.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Semiconductor Device Modeling

Summary of PhD Program:

In the recently funded project “Ferroelectric-enhanced analog accelerators for robust, ultra-low power edge intelligence,” the aim is to investigate extremely energy-efficient neuromorphic computing, i.e., computing systems inspired by our brain, based on novel ferroelectric devices that can mimic biological computing mechanisms. To solve this challenge, this project combines the expertise of partners at the University of Oulu, Aalto University, and Tampere University to create a library of computing devices to be fabricated, modeled, and integrated into computer-aided design (CAD) tools used by system-on-chip (SoC) designers.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Decolonial and Indigenous Geography of Militarisation (focus on Sápmi)

Summary of PhD Program:

You will be working on the Research Council of Finland-funded project ‘Militarised Indigenous Borderscapes: Reconfiguring geographies of war and borders’ (the public project description can be found here). Led by Dr Hidefumi Nishiyama (PI), the project will study the impacts of militarisation on Indigenous lands and peoples through the case studies of Sápmi and Okinawa. This position will focus on research on Sápmi and you will be conducting desk research and fieldwork with PI.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Water and wastewater treatment

Summary of PhD Program:

As a doctoral researcher, you will investigate the microbial degradation of long- and short-chain PFAS and their substitutes in complex water matrices. You will demonstrate the optimized process in real contaminated waters in collaboration with other partners. You will disseminate research results through scientific publications and conference presentations. The work includes a short-term research visit to Luleå University of Technology, in Sweden. The details of the research visit will be planned and discussed with the selected candidate taking into account project needs.

8. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in emission free pulping, Fibre and Particle Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The target of the Emission Free Pulping (EFP) project is to challenge chemistry and unit operations used in pulping processes to maximize product yield (i.e., fibre, lignin, and other wood components) while avoiding emissions (especially CO2). Feedstock will be wood-based biomass, the use of which should follow a cascading principle of raw material value.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nature-based water treatment systems in stormwater and snow dump melt water treatment in urban area

Summary of PhD Program:

You will work on research tasks involved in the project “Combined management of stormwater and snowmelt water in an urban environment: nature-based solutions and dimensioning issues” funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The project aims to investigate the use of nature-based solutions for urban water management in snow-affected areas. Project tasks include the implementation of pilot units and the monitoring of existing and implement systems in the urban area of the city of Oulu, Finland. The systems will be assessed for their ability to decrease water pollution caused by nutrients, solids and selected emerging contaminants such as microplastics.
