3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human Behavior and Cognition with a Focus on Decision-Making Processes

Summary of PhD Program:

We look for applicants with a passion for research, a curious and open mind, and a deep interest in understanding adaptive behavior and cognition, with a focus on decision making processes. We offer an opportunity for developing a doctoral dissertation (PhD) on heuristic decision making within the context of an interdisciplinary research program on adaptive behavior and cognition, so the so-called fast-and-frugal heuristics framework.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Strategy Department of Strategy

Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Strategy, Globalization and Society (SGS) of the Faculty of Business and Economics (HEC Lausanne) at the University of Lausanne provides a stimulating, interdisciplinary research environment. We value the diversity of the expertise of the members of the department as well as the diversity of the departments at the school. Members of the Department have published in leading outlets such as the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, The Management Science, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Management, Academy of Management Annals, Journal of Management Studies, etc.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in biology & Nutrition

Summary of PhD Program:

The Habib lab utilises tissue engineering to investigate aspects of embryogenesis and adult tissue formation. They use this knowledge to develop technologies that will promote tissue repair upon injury. For example, recently, using this approach they developed novel bandages that can promote bone repair in vivo. These technologies resulted in a patent, 107 news articles and a televised coverage in CBS-news.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in host-microbiome interactions

Summary of PhD Program:

The projet is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation through an SNSF Starting Grant. The project is aimed at shedding light on the dynamics and consequences of early life malnutrition on the bacterial population as well as strain-adaptation to changing nutritional environments. The project combines work with human samples from an ongoing birth cohort and experimental work in a murine animal model using different wet-lab and multi-omics techniques.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bacterial Cell Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The Vettiger lab has an open position to study the role of intrinsically disordered domains (IDDs) in class A penicillin binding protein (aPBP) regulation. aPBPs are a major class of cell wall synthases whose function is to maintain peptidoglycan (PG) integrity. In Gram-negative bacteria this is mediated through interactions with a specific outer membrane (OM) localized lipoprotein. However, based on preliminary data we observed high residual activity of PBP1b, the major aPBP in Escherichia coli, even in absence of the lipoprotein co-factor.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in microbiota-pesticide-host interactions

Summary of PhD Program:

The Engel lab (https://engelbeelab.com/) utilizes social bees to address current questions about the evolution, ecology and functioning of gut microbiota-host interactions. We focus on social bees, specifically honey bees, because they harbor relatively simple, yet specialized gut microbes that are experimentally tractable. Moreover, bees are key pollinator across environments for both agriculture and natural ecosystem. Unfortunately, pollinator species are threatened by multiple environmental stressors, including pesticide exposure. While it has become clear that gut microbial communities can play a significant role in xenobiotic metabolism (e.g. drug metabolism in humans), the extent to which gut bacteria contribute to pesticide breakdown or toxicity in honey bees has remained elusive. Hence, the overall aim of this PhD will be to understand how the gut microbiota interacts with pesticides and how those interactions in turn affect the host.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in structural and cellular biology of microbes

Summary of PhD Program:

Our laboratory works on mycobacteria to address current questions about the biogenesis of their unique cell envelope to understand their role in pathogenesis and infection. The overall aim of these PhD positions will be to understand how mycobacteria build and organize their cell envelope and how to destroy it using bacteriophages. The prospective candidates will apply cryo-electron microscopy to visualize bacteria cells in native conditions at high-resolution under different environmental (i.e. phage infection) and genetic (i.e. mutant) backgrounds, establish novel imaging tools to image bacteria, and use image processing to study the architecture of bacteria cells in three-dimensions.
