Within the framework of the Agriphotovoltaic (APV) project VAckerBio2, the arable use in a vertical APV system is tested and scientifically investigated. For this purpose, field trials are being carried out at the Ihinger Hof (shading trial) and practical plants in Wellingen (Saarland) and Donaueschingen-Aasen. The aim of the project is to investigate the effects of the vertical APV system on arable crop production, plant yield and cultivation costs. In addition, different concepts for the maintenance of the green strips under the module rows will be developed and tested, with the aim to promote agrobiodiversity without compromising PV productivity and arable land use.

Summary of PhD Program:
In this department, we focus on agriculture-related, sustainable technologies for the production of material products from residual biomass with an interdisciplinary, international team. EDELNASS focuses on the material utilization of regrowth from rewetted peatland grassland. Biomass and its site parameters from 5 peatland sites across Germany will be analyzed and investigated, tested and evaluated with respect to their applicability in 2 utilization processes: (i) conversion in biorefineries to the biobased, high-value basic chemicals HMF and furfural and optimization of the processes at the University of Hohenheim. Likewise, lignin will be produced as another product. The HMF can be further processed to produce the recyclable, bio-based high-performance plastic PEF, from which the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University develops sustainable packaging solutions, (ii) The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomics, together with its partners, produces fibers from the biomass and further processes them into papers and fiber castings.

Biodiversity crisis as a topic of the doctoral college How can a trend reversal be achieved in the progressive loss of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes? This is the central question of the interdisciplinary doctoral college “Levers for a transformation of agricultural landscapes: from biodiversity loss to biodiversity increase” (HABIT). The college includes twelve doctoral projects that are embedded in a social-ecological systems perspective and transformation research approaches. The range of topics ranges from ecological and agronomic issues to socio-economic analyzes to the agricultural policy level, including consumer behavior.
