1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Tumour Growth

Summary of PhD Program:

The current MRC New Investigator Grant focuses on peritoneal dialysis for kidney disease and aims to add metabolites/drugs to improve this treatment, but this also opens the exciting possibility for using peritoneal dialysis as a tissue-targeted drug delivery tool for metastatic ovarian cancer. This includes utilising existing chemotherapies (e.g. Carboplatin) and targeting new peritoneal-specific mechanisms that promote tumour growth.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Finite Volume Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian computational framework for high-speed multi-material impact

Summary of PhD Program:

Computational verification of high-speed multi-material flows, where physical experimentation is highly limited, is seen as critical by the Defence Sector (source: the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment). Recent work by the group (leading to REF 4* rated outputs and several Keynotes) has contributed to bridging the gap between Computational Solid and Fluid Dynamics, with a unified computational framework exploiting the use of physical and geometrical conservation laws in a variety of spatial discretisation schemes (i.e. Finite Element, Finite Volume, Meshless).

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Novel Heterogeneous Catalytic Process for Net-Zero Water Industry

Summary of PhD Program:

In the UK, industries such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, and agriculture generate significant amounts of organic wastewater. Annually, the UK produces 2.4 billion cubic meters of wastewater, with about 50-70% being organic. Environmental regulations, including the Water Resources Act 1991, the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and the Water Industry Act 1991, mandate that wastewater must be treated before being discharged into the environment. Thus, these industries require effective wastewater treatment solutions to mitigate environmental impacts and comply with regulations.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Interpreting Stress Responses that Drive Adaptive Immune Switches in the Tumour Microenvironment SUSPRS

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD will utilise in vitro co-culture models at SU to uncover links between TME composition, ER stress, and gene expression. Findings will then be validated in in vivo models at HMH, including HGSOC orthotopic models and B cell-specific IRE-1/XBP-1 deficient mice. If successful, this research could pave the way for next-generation treatment regimens with translational potential.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Early education, education, education: childcare in the policy and imagination of New Labour’s England, 1994-2003

Summary of PhD Program:

This studentship explores the policies and practice of childcare as envisaged by New Labour between 1994 and the early 2000s. The student will use recently opened material held at The National Archives to investigate the politics of childcare, and to consider the ways that it intersected with, and was informed by, governmental interest in poverty, the family, work, and social mobility during this era of contemporary British history. The project will be particularly appealing to students with an interest in the politics of the late-1990s and early 2000s, and students with an interest in the social history of gender and the family in the period.

Fully Funded PhD Position in Toric Geometry and Multivariate Splines SURES

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this PhD project is to explore the properties of splines through the lens of applied algebraic geometry, with a particular focus on their relationship to toric geometry. Splines are mathematical representations built upon simpler pieces (usually defined by low-degree polynomials) glued together to form smooth curves, surfaces, or higher-dimensional objects. They are fundamental tools for approximation and computational design, crucial in finite element methods, computer vision, and geometric deep learning.
