1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Supply Chain Resilience Assessments and Strategies for Improvement

Summary of PhD Program:

Supply chains, which are increasingly being disrupted by changing weather patterns, natural disasters, geopolitical and trade tensions, are more susceptible to shortages, cost variations, safety issues and criminality than ever. This project will investigate and develop strategies to increase supply chain resilience in collaboration with a major UK food producer.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Novel Feature-Based Thermal Topology Optimisation

Summary of PhD Program:

Structural design and optimisation are crucial for a sustainable future. Incorporating new technologies, increased electrification and the use of new materials all mean increased thermal consideration is essential for new designs. Topology optimisation enables the design of lightweight and highly efficient structures by optimising the distribution of material within a given design space and subject to specific loads and constraints. It allows for the creation of innovative lightweight structures that would be difficult or impossible to design manually.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Novel Feature-Based Thermal Topology Optimisation

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD will improve upon the work by Shannon et al. and apply this to the topology optimisation of thermal problems. Given the reduction in the number of design variables, it becomes possible to leverage gradient-enhanced surrogate modelling techniques within the optimisation. This not only guarantees a global optimum but also provides a mechanism by which multiple objectives and constraints can be included. The existing surrogate modelling toolset developed at the University of Southampton also enables multiple levels of simulation fidelity and even categorical variables to be employed within such an optimisation[2].

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Advanced Thermomechanical Modelling for Predictive Deformation Control in Composite Injection Overmoulding

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to develop a robust thermomechanical model for composite injection overmoulding, a process critical to efficient, sustainable manufacturing in industries such as aerospace and automotive. By enhancing the predictive capabilities for deformation and insert dislocation, the project aims to optimise process parameters, reducing material waste and energy consumption. Collaborating with Collins Aerospace, the student will have the opportunity to contribute to high-impact research while gaining practical industry experience through a placement at the company.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Immersive Applications to aid emotional regulation in Autistic Children

Summary of PhD Program:

The objective of this project is to investigate the suitability of games technology as a means of intervention/ regulative therapy for autistic children. Emotional dysregulation is associated with social and behavioural deficits for autistic children and can result in disruption to their educational development (Berkovits et al., 2017). (Ching Mey et al., 2015) states that Multi Sensory rooms can be used as a means of assisting autistic children to regulate and can provide educational benefits to participants. (Unwin et al., 2021) also suggests that the benefits of these can be enhanced when the layout and items in the room can be centred on the individual participant.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Immersive Technologies for Climate Focused Bridge Monitoring

Summary of PhD Program:

The objective of this project is to investigate the use of immersive technologies to aid in knowledge transfer from infrastructure monitoring. The resilience of existing transport infrastructure to the projected impacts of climate change remains relatively unexplored. Bridges are not only vital links in our transport systems but also carry energy, water, and communication networks, making them critical points of cascading failure.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Characterising and valuing of health impacts of the transition to zero emission technologies in the public transport sector

Summary of PhD Program:

There has been extensive assessment of the environmental impact of emerging zero emission (ZE) vehicle technologies, including battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell variants, across multiple modes of transport. Adoption of these technologies is growing rapidly. It is forecast that by 2040 up to 83% of all bus sales globally will be zero emission technologies. However, to date there has been little assessment of the wider health impacts of the transition to zero emission vehicles. Indeed, there is not even consensus on the methods for reporting them.
