1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Skeletal Muscle Atrophy

Summary of PhD Program:

The main project is to discover, test, and confirm key factors controlling mechanotransduction and proteasomal activity that are involved in the regulation of skeletal muscle mass and function, and to investigate whether these factors can be modulated by countermeasures, such as exercise, in humans. The successful candidate will work primarily with cell models, but will also use skeletal muscle tissue from humans and mice. The student will then use molecular, functional, and phenotypic data to translate the findings of the project into the discovery of relevant mechanotransduction and proteasomal factors that control unloading/disuse induced skeletal muscle alterations. Therefore, we are looking for highly motivated students with a strong background in cell biology and a genuine interest in skeletal muscle physiology.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neural Circuits

Summary of PhD Program:

The Meletis Laboratory at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm has an open position for a doctoral student to investigate the circuit mechanisms that control motivated behaviors. The doctoral student will investigate the in vivo role of circuits and genetically-defined neurons types in motivated behaviors (e.g. appetitive, aversive) and define circuit dysfunction in disease-relevant mouse models. The project will take advantage of advanced methods in systems neuroscience including cell-type specific in vivo imaging (e.g. photometry, miniscopes), cell-type specific manipulation during behavior (e.g. optogenetics), wholebrain circuit tracing, Patch-seq, and mapping of neuron identity using molecular methods (e.g. snRNA-seq and genetic labeling).

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

The Meletis Laboratory at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm has an open position for a doctoral student, with the aim to use new technologies to understand the complexity of cell types and circuits in the mammalian nervous system in health and disease. The project will combine single-cell RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, optogenetics, genetically modified viruses, and other platforms to define the molecular organization of brain circuits, the identity of neuron subtypes, and how neuronal diversity helps explain connectivity and functional complexity. The aim is to define cell-type specific connectivity with state-of-the-art approaches that include molecular profiling of neuron subtypes and connectivity at large scale using barcoded viruses.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD student who joins our team will be investigating the sensorineural substrate that perceive and/or transmit the sensory inputs in the vestibular organs and to the first relay center in the brainstem, and their plasticity in various conditions. The projects in the lab make use of various methods, including mouse genetic tools, single cell omics, virus tracing technology, histology, and behavioral assays to reveal the different sensory channels and associated central circuits that underlie our sense of proprioception and balance. The candidate will characterize the biological properties of newly identified molecular cell types and explore their circuit integration and function.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in psychiatric epidemiology

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a new PhD student who will work within the unit for integrative epidemiology at the Institute for Environmental Medicine (IMM), Karolinska Institutet. The main goal of the research activities within the unit is to improve the understanding of the causes and consequences of ill-health and disease, with a focus on psychiatric disorders, neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. The student will work together with associate professor Donghao Lu at Karolinska Institutet. Dr. Lu leads a research group with the goal of understanding the underlying biological mechanisms that influence reproductive mood disorders (such as perinatal depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, perimenopausal depression, etc.) and potential health consequences.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

The Hadjab laboratory studies the development, and homeostasis of the somatosensory neurons (Nat Comm 2019, Nat Comm 2020, Cell Rep 2019, Development 2019, Nature Comm 2021, Nat Comm 2022) using mouse genetics, advanced single cell omics technologies and behavior in mice. The laboratory is located in a collaborative division in the new building BIOMEDICUM at Karolinska Institutet. The selected student will continue the successful line of investigations based on single-cell multiomic to study pain-sensing neurons plasticity in health and disease, and how this can be affected by the metabolism rate.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in working hours, recovery and safety

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD student in our research group, you will primarily work in a newly started research project that is about promoting recovery among first-line managers and employees in Swedish 24/7 healthcare. Together with your supervisor and the project team, you will drive the project forward according to plan. You will be in contact with our partners in various organizations, lead the recruitment of participants and be responsible for data collection (via interviews, surveys and register data) and data management. You will also lead a group-based intervention with a focus on recovery based on techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational talking.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in medical radiation physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The research group consists of hospital physicists and oncologists and conducts research in clinical radiotherapy (external radiotherapy, brachytherapy). The group is relatively newly started and has been added out of need/interest for research in clinical radiotherapy. Most of the members are employed at Karolinska University Hospital either at FE Radiation Therapy Technology and Technology (Medical Radiation Therapy Physics) or at ME Radiation Therapy (Topic Cancer). Karolinska Hospital’s radiation therapy is conducted jointly by these units, which are organizationally separate within the hospital’s operations. Right now, the group has several PhD students registered We work actively to increase our activity and strengthen our research profile.
