Umeå University, Sweden invites online application for multiple fully funded PhD programs in various research areas. Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible.
1. WASP AI Program: PhD position in Mathematical Statistics or Computational Science
Summary of PhD Positions:
The interplay between optimization and machine learning is the cornerstone of many important advances in inference systems and artificial intelligence in the last decade. The vast majority of machine learning applications are modeled and solved as an optimization problem. To accommodate the increasing complexity of problem models along with massive amounts of data, machine learning entails the development of new optimization methods. In contrast to the traditional black-box optimization framework, an end-to-end view of modeling and optimization is central to these novel algorithms.
Application Deadlines: May 15, 2022
2. PhD student in Media & Communication Studies with a focus on Northern Sweden
Summary of PhD Positions:
This PhD-position is part of the project “Media Discourses of a Sustainable North: journalism, places and practices in transition” which has a focus on the media industry’s on-going mobilisation in the North of Sweden due to the so-called green re-industrialisation. The media’s possibilities to be a transformative power in the transition towards more sustainable societies are studied here. The democratic role of journalism, and the national media’s renewed interest in Norrland, are of particular interest for empirical research and critical analysis, which is why we welcome research proposals with such profiles.
Application Deadlines: 2022-05-22
3. PhD student in Computing Science with focus on data privacy
Summary of PhD Positions:
The project is part of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. Software is the main enabler in these systems, and is an integrated research theme of the program.
Application Deadlines: 2022-05-24
4. Ph.D. Student position in Chemistry with focus on Planetary Geochemistry and Spectroscopy
Summary of PhD Positions:
The doctoral studies are aimed at a doctoral degree where the main task is reseach within a project to resolve the formation and stability of liquid water in martian analogue soil and salt mixtures. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council. You will explore the interfacial chemistry of water/ice formed in these mixtures using vibrational spectroscopy under low and high temperature settings. Furthermore, you will bridge these analyses with remote sensing data from Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) of NASA to understand the aqueous history of Mars and revealing potential water resources for future human explorations. In addition to the research assignment, participation in postgraduate courses is also included.

5. PhD student in Computational Science and Engineering with a focus on machine learning
Summary of PhD Positions:
Machine learning is a key technique in many different areas, and machine learning accounts for many of the recent successes in artificial intelligence. One way to handle the problem with small amounts of data in high-dimensional machine learning is to use prior information—usually by prior distributions or penalties. Structured priors and penalties mean that we encode domain-specific, expert, or prior knowledge about a problem into the machine learning model. By encoding a particular structure, the model can select relevant groups of variables, reduce the risk of overfitting the training data, and improve our ability to interpret the model and understand the data.

6. PhD position in computational methods for wave propagation
Summary of PhD Positions:
There are many challenges to simulate wave propagation in realistic models. For example, waves propagate for many periods in a domain much larger than the wavelength, thus requiring scalable high-order methods that are suitable for implementation on modern parallel computers. Complex geometry at material interfaces and boundaries imposes difficulties for generating high-quality meshes. Heterogeneous material properties with discontinuities and multiscale features require special techniques to achieve high-order accuracy. As an example, the elastic wave equation models seismic waves generated by earthquakes that propagate through the Earth layers and on the Earth surface. The surface waves give rise to ground shaking and can cause enormous damages to the surrounding communities.

7. PhD position in Environmental Science, with focus on sustainable mining in the Arctic
Summary of PhD Positions:
The mining industry plays an important role for the supply of essential metals, but mining is also associated with negative environmental effects and societal controversies. This is especially true in arctic environments in northern Sweden, where also a large number of abandoned, current and potential future mines are located. In order to reach more sustainable mining, we need to account for the environmental impact. Although authorities and industry routinely use biological indices to monitor the state of the environment, they lack guidelines to assess the ecological status of mining-impacted environments. This PhD-project aims to not only assess the ecological consequences in the Arctic, but also develop frameworks and guidelines for sustainable mining that can be applied on a larger spatial scale.

9. PhD position in political science with a focus on Transformation, Riskification and Geopolitics in the Arctic
Summary of PhD Positions:
The aim of this doctoral project is to contribute with new empirical insights into political drivers in the development of the Arctic and to increase our contextual understanding by way of international concepts facilitating cross-disciplinary dialogue. The climate crisis and increasing competition over natural resources and security solutions challenge established forms of cooperation in the region and by extension the global goals of sustainability, for example as these are expressed Agenda 2030. The Arctic lacks an obvious center of gravity while the effects of transformation are unevenly distributed. Actors calculate risk under the influence of different geopolitical connotations. Who among the many actors involved have the power to influence Arctic transformation? Is it conceivable to arrive at a sustainable agenda, not broken by groups of optimists, skeptics and deniers?
