2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Demonstration-Initialized Reinforcement Learning for Robotic Manipulation
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of this PhD project is to enable fast setup of robot manipulators to complete advanced manufacturing tasks by the use of digital models. This should be accomplished using methods such as reinforcement learning that should be initialized with information from human demonstrations. The developed method should be applied to the manipulation of flexible objects based on both visual and tactile information. The candidate will be responsible for developing detailed simulation models of both robots, sensors, and components to be assembled. In addition, the candidate should develop robust manipulation strategies and implement these in a real robot system.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Contemporary Travel Writing
Summary of PhD Program:
MAP will question how awareness of travel writing’s imperialist pedigree, the environmental costs of travel, and the emergence of digital media have changed perspectives on travel, and the ways in which it is written and documented. The PhD could thus focus, for instance, on how slow travel, flight shame, sustainable travel, eco- or anti-tourism, staycations or microadventures have altered ideas about mobility and place, as well as the forms in which these ideas are articulated. Centrally, the PhD should address the growing awareness that personal mobility has become inextricably intertwined with planetary concerns.
Application Deadline: September 4, 2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Software Technologies for Artificial Intelligence Research Infrastructure Development
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project is set up in the context of supporting the research activities within the Data and Intelligence lab at the Centre for Industrial Software. The project will concentrate on leveraging AI and big data technologies – particularly large language models (LLMs) and knowledge graphs – to enable intelligent data discovery across diverse domains. The work will utilize both local and cloud-based computational resources at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). This project offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge AI infrastructure research while supporting a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Talking Empire – Prime Ministerial Rhetoric and the Search for a Usable Past in Post-Imperial Britain
Summary of PhD Program:
This project examines the enduring legacies of empire in British politics (1960-2025) through a rhetorical analysis of prime ministers’ uses of the imperial past in public speeches and writings. By shedding new light on how the world’s largest empire has been reimagined, mythologized, and contested after its dissolution, we will provide historical context for contemporary discussions on colonialism’s continuing impact in Britain and beyond. Specifically, this project explains how heads of governments have used and abused the imperial past for political purposes, enhancing our understanding of their critical role as agents of contested postcolonial memories, combining historical research and rhetorical analysis with digital humanities methods.
Application Deadline: September 4, 2025
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in The Morality of Extreme Wealth
Summary of PhD Program:
The project explores how moral reasons to worry about inequality and poverty are transformed when wealth becomes extreme and aims to build new theory on the morality of extreme wealth. The project aims at three significant academic contributions: (1) to explore and map out distinctive moral reasons to be concerned with extreme wealth from the perspective of distributive justice, (2) to analyse the role of individual responsibility in a theory of extreme wealth morality, and (3) to evaluate the moral obligations of the extremely wealthy in a society with existing injustices. The project is a collaboration between PI, Lasse Nielsen (SDU) and Co-PI, David V. Axelsen (University of Essex).
Application Deadline: September 30, 2025
7. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
The successful candidate will work on developing new theoretical models and computational methods to investigate the fundamental limits of polariton-assisted inelastic electron tunneling in tunnel junctions made from conventional materials (e.g., traditional metals), two-dimensional materials, and their combinations. The project will employ a broad spectrum of analytical, semi-analytical, and numerical techniques to rigorously study these phenomena. A major focus of the work will be to leverage polariton-mediated inelastic electron tunneling as a tool for probing and manipulating light–matter interactions at the extreme nanoscale.
