1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Musicology

Summary of PhD Program:

The successful applicant must carry out his or her project within the indicated field. It is expected that the successful applicant will complete the project within the period of appointment. The project proposal should fall within musicology and will be assessed with reference to existing research milieus and available competence within the department. For the strategic development of musicology in the department we are especially interested in projects located in perspectives of critical musicology/the cultural study of music, and projects that might combine such perspective with music technology or sound studies. Other topics will, however, also be relevant.

Application Deadline: 24th February 2025

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microbial Interaction with Deep Oceanic Crust

Summary of PhD Program:

The primary objective is to quantify the environmental impact of microbial and/or fungal activity in the oceanic crust. This project will advance our understanding through an interdisciplinary approach combining micro-fluidics, with genomics, atomic-scale mineral dissolution measurements, biogeochemical rate modelling, high resolution 3D-imaging, isotope labelling and integrated geobiological data analysis. Analytical approaches implemented can include a multitude of advanced molecular, microscopically and geochemical techniques and protocols such as microbial genomics, atomic force microscopy combined with vertical scanning interferometry (ATM-VSI), x-ray diffraction (XRD).

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydrogen Safety: Simulating Hydrogen Explosions in Complex Geometries

Summary of PhD Program:

The objective of the PhD project is to improve the predictive capabilities of the open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code PDRFOAM for scenarios involving turbulent premixed combustion in complex geometries. The research activities will entail implementation of models in the source code (C++) and validation against published results from experiments or detailed simulations (e.g. large eddy simulation, LES). The work will be conducted in collaboration with other research projects on hydrogen safety at the department.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Element Fluxes in Archean seafloor hydrothermal systems

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD position is dedicated to increase our understanding of the consequences of Archean seawater chemistry on subsurface reactions and geochemical fluxes in Archean seafloor hydrothermal system, in particular low-temperature systems with evidence for early microbial activity. The project will focus on outcrop and drill core samples from the Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa and Eswatini, and will combine geochemical analyses with stable isotope analyses and petrographic work. Work on natural samples will be complemented with geochemical modeling to assess impacts of Archean seawater chemistry on subsurface reactions and fluid compositions.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Latin American History connected to the DARKLAX project

Summary of PhD Program:

DARKLAX studies the history of salmon farming in Chile from a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective. It analyzes the transformation of the Chilean South since the late 1960s into a global hub for the experimentation with economic, scientific, social and rhetorical technologies for social change and control, as well as for a radical transformation in the relation between society and more-than-human nature. It also explores its reverberation throughout Latin America, paying attention to environmental, social and political changes in the region directly associated with the rise of salmon farming in Chile.

Application Deadline: 22nd January 2025

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geodynamics and Surface Processes

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to quantify and model the 3D structure and evolution of the Southern Pyrenees foreland fold and thrust belt and its associated surface process response. The structural style of foreland fold and thrust belts (FTB) as observed in the Southern Pyrenees is highly variable in width, structural style, and topography. Long term sediment input onto the foreland basin combines with short-term mass wasting events possibly resulting from large catastrophic seismic events. How short and long-term deposition affect the evolving thrust belt is unclear.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in subsurface geoscience

Summary of PhD Program:

In the InFluSe project, an integrated team consisting of senior researchers and 4 different PhD candidates will investigate the Southern Norwegian North Sea source-to-seep system through analysis of new and existing data from four different perspectives, 1) remote sensing and geomatics; 2) subsurface data (seismic, well and core data) and sedimentary systems; 3) geophysics and shallow subsurface; and 4) geochemistry and geobiology. The analysis work will be supported by a series of scientific cruises to acquire new data in the SNNS area. This advertisement is for Position 2, which deals with interpreting existing subsurface data and performing modelling to understand the subsurface source-to-seep migration system.
