1. Fully Funded PhD Position in mathematics or mathematical statistics, with focus on geometric deep learning

Summary of PhD Program:

The project aims at deepening the mathematical theory of geometric deep learning. Exciting research questions include the development of new ways of constructing equivariant networks, describing the resulting models mathematically, and directly analyzing how symmetries affect the training of neural networks. The project is affiliated with the AI/Math track within Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), and the PhD student will take part in the WASP graduate school.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science (Neurophysiology)

Summary of PhD Program:

Proprioception is essential for movement coordination. Muscle spindles are considered the principal receptors for proprioception. These complex sensory organs are traditionally believed to be muscle stretch receptors, signalling limb position and movement speed.

Our lab has recently challenged such beliefs by showing that spindles are also highly responsive to local muscle pressure. These findings urge a re-evaluation of proprioceptive feedback in various sensorimotor contexts and neuromuscular pathologies. Part of the PhD project will further assess the impact of muscle pressure on human spindles. The project will therefore add significantly to our understanding of how we perceive our muscles’ mechanical state.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The ‘Ultrafast Nanoscience’ group at Umeå University is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate interested in performing research on ultrafast spectroscopy in condensed matter nanosystems. The project interfaces exciting fields of research, including ultrafast science, photonics and magnetism, with an overarching goal to understand the dynamics of electronic degrees of freedom (charges and spins) in nanostructured materials.

The PhD student will study the physical mechanisms underlying light-matter interactions in nanoscale magnetic materials. By combining time-resolved (pump-probe) spectroscopy, finite element method and micromagnetic modelling, the candidate will design and realize plasmonic excitations affecting magnetic phenomena on ultrafast timescales. The project will disclose novel mechanisms which might have a huge impact on forthcoming light-driven data processing technologies.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The successful applicant will develop a research project to elucidate the poorly understood molecular mechanisms that control malaria parasite development in the mosquito. As part of an international and interdisciplinary collaboration, they will be able to draw on a broad range of novel CRISPR screening, single cell transcriptomic, metabolic modeling and cryoEM technologies to understand molecular determinants of parasite development and how such knowledge can be used to block the transmission of malaria. A person who is employed as a PhD student shall primarily devote themselves to their own education. The project and research environment will give the dedicated student the opportunity to train as a first-class researcher.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Science with focus on High-Performance Computing

Summary of PhD Program:

A tensor network is a flexible mathematical framework for efficiently approximating and computing with high-dimensional tensors. Tensor networks appear in a broad variety of scientific applications, ranging from the study of quantum many-body systems to autonomous driving and to explainable machine learning models. Computations with tensor networks present two main challenges:

1) The order in which nodes are contracted with one another affects both time and space requirements, and finding the optimal order is an NP complete problem.

2) In many applications, the tensors exhibit sparsity and properties that must be exploited for the contractions to become feasible. High-performance parallel libraries for the computation of tensor networks are still vastly missing. This project aims to develop novel algorithms, data structures, and software for tensor network algorithms in various applications.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Science

Summary of PhD Program:

The main goal of the project is to develop an AI system for rehabilitation of patients with impaired arm and hand function. At the hand surgery clinic in Umeå, patients with impaired function in their arm and hand are treated. This may include traumatic amputation injuries as well as congenital absence or underdevelopment of a part of the upper extremity, a condition sometimes referred to as dysmelia. Injuries to the arm’s nerve plexus (plexus injury), or other nerves, can lead to a dramatic reduction in motor functions in the arm and hand.
