1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sustainable Food Systems
Summary of PhD Program:
The Business Management Group develops knowledge and increases awareness of economically, socially and ecologically sustainable operations and systems in the green sector. We engage with entrepreneurship, leadership and governance across agriculture, forestry and horticulture as well as urban and rural landscapes. We are expanding research activities in the area of sustainable food systems.
Application Deadline: 2024-08-09
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in agrarian history
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD student we are looking for will be part of the ERC-funded project TransRein. TransRein is about the sweeping change that took place in northern Eurasia, from the Atlantic coast to the Bering Strait, during the early modern era when an economy based on hunting and fishing and small reindeer herds transitioned to large-scale reindeer husbandry. It was a change that fundamentally affected people and societies. In the doctoral project, one aspect of this change will be studied, the social consequences, and it will be done in a Sami context. The thesis work will therefore touch on issues such as: heritage, gender, social justice, division of labor, households, networks and social relations, all about indigenous peoples. The doctoral project’s design and exact questions are drawn up in collaboration between the supervisors and the person receiving the position.
Application Deadline: 2024-08-31

3. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
The goal of the doctoral project in forest pathology is to create knowledge about trees’ defense responses and develop methods that help forest tree breeders and forest nurseries to identify trees with a better ability to handle biotic and abiotic stress. You are expected to conduct research, in collaboration with researchers at the dept. of forest mycology and plant pathology, and the Umeå Plant Science Center (UPSC), which leads to a doctoral thesis. The doctoral studies includes courses corresponding to at least 30 higher education credits You are also expected to complete an industrial internship at your employer Södra.
Application Deadline: 2024-08-19
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in forest microbiology
Summary of PhD Program:
The goal of the project is to identify molecular, ecological, and practical aspects of ectomycorrhizal soil fungi that allow increasing drought resistance in pine seedlings. You are expected to conduct research, in collaboration with researchers at the Dept of Forest Mycology and Plant Pathology and Holmen Skog AB, which leads to a doctoral degree and publication of papers. In parallel to the scientific work, the candidate will follow the PhD education at SLU. You are also expected to complete an industrial internship at your employer Holmen Skog AB.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in drought resistance breeding
Summary of PhD Program:
The project aims to identify genetic variation in drought resistance based on the phenotypic data at range-wide population level and individual tree level in breeding populations. The genomic basis of drought resistance will be dissected using a 50K SNP array as a genotyping tool. The project will develop new competences in genomic breeding and address challenges to incorporate genomics in traditional breeding program for the Skogforsk. The combination of phenotyping, genotype-environment association and genotype-phenotype association in this project are novel approaches.
Application Deadline: 2024-08-19
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in forest genomics
Summary of PhD Program:
The Scots pine project will (1) Examine the genomic base of local adaptation in natural and breeding populations to find genomic locations (loci) of adaptation for climate changes (2) Study the distribution of the adaptive loci in breeding populations thereby examining potential adaptation of current breeding populations to future climates and (3) Developing new strategies to adapt Scots pine breeding population to climate changes by genome-enhanced selection or assisted migration approaches.
Application Deadline: 2024-08-19
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in drought resistance biology
Summary of PhD Program:
The forests in Sweden are facing challenges due to anthropogenic climate change, with temperatures projected to increase by 5°C by 2100. This will raise the frequency and severity of drought events, impacting the survival of seedlings and overall forest productivity. With 85% of annually planted spruce coming from seed orchards, soon to be 100%, the current breeding model prioritizes yield and wood quality over resilience to future climate conditions. Consequently, existing plant material is not optimized for anticipated climate changes, affecting forest ecology, societal well-being, biodiversity, and the economy.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in artificial intelligence in agriculture
Summary of PhD Program:
We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to focus on developing robust and adaptive AI models based on agricultural imaging data (e.g., digital, multispectral and/or hyperspectral) from dynamic and complex environments across different scenarios tailored for Swedish farming systems. A particular focus would be developing machine vision models with generative machine learning techniques and/or multimodal learning to enhance the monitoring and scoring ability of AI models in agriculture.
Application Deadline: 2024-09-02
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Spider Silk Protein Biochemistry
Summary of PhD Program:
You will be part of an excellent team of several PhD students, Postdocs and Researchers working on different projects related to biotechnological methods for producing recombinant silk proteins, characterization of these, spinning of fibers, protein engineering, material characterization and bioinformatics to understand the transcriptome profile of the silk glands. Your work will involve cloning, protein expression, protein purification, spinning and tensile testing. Additionally, you will use biophysical methods like circular dichroism spectroscopy, birefringence microscopy, rheology, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
