Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Geological Sciences invites applications for a four-year PhD position based at the Centre for Palaeogenetics (CPG) on the Stockholm University campus. The PhD project is part of the First Contact research program funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, with the goal of understanding the impacts of human dispersal on faunal biodiversity. The PhD project will use state-of-the-art ancient DNA techniques from both bones and sediments to reconstruct the evolutionary and ecological histories of animal communities across time intervals that include the first arrival of humans in multiple regions.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

Historical geography and landscape studies concern the interconnections, relationships, processes and outcomes of people’s interactions with the land – in urban, regional and rural settings; at local, national and global scales; and, through historical and contemporary periods. Researchers in this group currently work in Colombia, Sweden, Italy, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and China. Within the group, there are currently five key areas of investigation: Historical Geography and Settlement studies; Agriculture and Farming; Past and Present; Land use, livelihoods and the environment; Society-Nature relations and political ecology. The group has a focus on innovative and traditional geographical methods. For example, research methods use by group members include: historical map analysis, GIS, satellite image analysis, landscape surveys, semi-structured interviews, field surveys, participant observation, visual methods, and emotional geographies.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

This position is associated with the accounting section at the Stockholm Business School, Stockholm University. As a doctoral student in business administration with a focus on perspectives on climate change in coastal seas, you will also be part of the interdisciplinary doctoral program “Perspectives on climate change in coastal seas.” The interdisciplinary doctoral program focuses on the role of the coastal zone in climate feedbacks and the role of organizations in protecting coastal areas and addressing climate change. You will join a group of doctoral students and other researchers who study the Baltic Sea coastal areas within marine science, environmental science, organizational studies, and legal sciences, at Stockholm University.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

The Department of Zoology invites applications for two four-year PhD positions based at the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm. The PhD student positions are funded through an ERC Advanced Grant (PrimiGenomes) awarded to Love Dalén. The overall project is aimed at investigating speciation, large-scale biogeographic processes and adaptive evolution in mammals during the Pleistocene, through palaeogenomic analysis of remains that are up to two million years old. One of the PhD student projects will be focused on small rodents, where examples of scientific questions that will be addressed include whether morphological changes have primarily been driven by rapid adaptive evolution or extinctions/recolonisations, and to what extent past climate change have affected species demography.

SURE consists of researchers with a variety of interests and approaches but all are united in exploring contemporary spatial processes and change. Our research engages with debates in urban, cultural, and economic geography as well as spatial planning, governance and policy studies. Current research within the profile includes work on: the cultural and creative sector, creativity and innovation, digital geographies, social movements and spatial justice, cultural policy, urban and regional development, gender perspectives, and emotional geographies. Another cluster of current research themes covers the governance and culture of regional planning, the need of expertise for future urban and regional planners, urban governance and climate transformation, planning and development of mega-projects, comparative research on planning systems and policy as well as EU cohesion policy.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

In 2023, the Department of Geological Sciences (IGV) expanded the analytical capacity of its marine and lacustrine core-processing laboratory. We acquired an X-ray CT scanner and a Hyperspectral infrared (IR) core imaging system, and upgraded our Multi-Sensor core logger and XRF-core scanner. The X-ray CT system provides detailed images of sedimentary structures, allows volume reconstructions of pore space properties, and automated quantification of important sedimentary features (e.g., ice-rafted detritus and bioturbation). Hyperspectral infrared imaging is a new frontier for the biogeochemical characterization of marine and lake sediments, and has been used to quantify the amount and type of organic matter, identify crypto-tephra, and may be used to map certain mineral distributions.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to increase our understanding of the relative ecological impacts of climate variability, and whether marine protected areas (specifically spatial fishing restrictions) can be used to reduce such impacts, focusing on phytobenthic communities (fish, vegetation, invertebrates) in shallow coastal areas of the Baltic Sea; a marginal sea where climate warming, eutrophication and fishing are suspected to contribute to an ongoing shift in the coastal ecosystem. The project will use a combination of methods including i) statistical analyses of historical data from several environmental monitoring programs, ii) analyses of archived biological samples to track temporal food web changes using stable isotopes, and iii) comparative field surveys within and outside of protected areas (also here comparing with historical data).

8. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

If we could mimic nature’s use of metals for harvesting sunlight, energy conversion, and chemical synthesis it would eliminate the need for fossil fuels and greatly increase the possibilities of green chemistry. These reactions are based on challenging redox reactions by high-valent metal clusters in proteins. To understand and mimic this chemistry it is of central importance to know the geometric and electronic structures of the metal core as well as the protein ligand environment for these reactive intermediates. In this project we combine serial X-ray crystallography with X-ray spectroscopy (XAS/XES) on proteins in-solution and in-crystal to determine electronic and atomic structures of key intermediates in enzymes utilizing dinuclear metal sites for chemically very challenging reactions.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

We search for a highly motivated PhD candidate to perform computational multi-scale simulations of proteins catalyzing biological energy conversion, in particular enzymes responsible for cellular respiration or photosynthesis. The project is focused on how membrane-bound enzymes capture and store chemical or light energy and transduce this into other energy forms. The project will address the structure, function, and dynamics of these fascinating proteins by QM/MM, atomistic MD simulations, and free energy simulations. The PhD candidate will work closely with other PhD students, postdocs and senior scientists of the lab in an interdisciplinary team. Several projects related multi-scale simulations, bioenergetics, and protein function are possible depending on background and interests of the applicant.
