1. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in applied probability and network optimization
Summary of PhD Program:
The Department of Mathematics of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam welcomes applications for two fully-funded, 4-year PhD positions in applied probability and network optimization for climate-aware energy systems. Both positions are part of a NWO research project motivated by one of the biggest challenges of our time: keeping the lights on in a world of clean energy and climate extremes. As we move away from fossil fuels and embrace renewables like wind and solar, our power grids must adapt to the rising threat of extreme weather events. This joint research project brings together advanced math, applied probability, and network science to build smarter and more resilient energy systems. By modeling how climate-driven disasters ripple through energy networks and by optimizing how we design and operate them, the goal is to create a new generation of tools that help prevent cascading failure and blackouts —even in the face of storms, heatwaves, and the unpredictable future of our climate.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Risk Preferences
Summary of PhD Program:
You will conduct independent, high-quality research and work together with a diverse team of researchers, that is supported by high-level industry experts. The project that you will be part of aims at improving our understanding of the foundation of risk preferences. The analysis may include experiments, theory, and financial applications (general equilibrium and life-cycle models). The setup of the project allows you to show and develop a variety of skills and write a very complete job market paper, such that you will be very competitive on the academic job market. On the other hand, the strong ties of the project with the industry experts, also give you the opportunity to prepare well for an industry position.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Moral Dilemmas and Ethics of Crisis Leadership
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will study how narratives in times of crisis embody ethical values and principles and under which conditions they can be fruitfully employed. It consists of four steps. First, it will first carry out a small number of case-studies by analysing the ethical dimensions of narratives in two or three different well-documented crises, at least one of which has to do with violent extremism. Second, it will develop an analytic-philosophical framework for identifying different sets of ethical values and principles – e.g. utilitarian ones, deontological ones, religiously grounded or motivated ones, virtue ethical ones, ones centred around freedom and autonomy, ones centred around respect and authority, and so on – and how they are embodied in and evoked by various narratives.
Application Deadline: 24-5-2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in modeling the resilience of biodiversity in urban landscapes
Summary of PhD Program:
SPARC uses data-driven spatial modeling techniques to quantify the impact of urban landscapes. The project involves modeling habitat suitability and connectivity using a combination of species distribution modeling and current-flow modeling. Species’ traits and metrics of urban affinity will be used to differentiate species- and city-specific drivers of trajectories. Further, a species-level index will be developed to summarize trajectories, specifying the risks or benefits associated with urban land uses. This project focuses on 50,000+ species of all terrestrial taxonomic groups in hundreds of cities globally.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational synthetic living systems
Summary of PhD Program:
The Department of Mathematics of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam welcomes applications for a fully-funded, 4-year PhD position in computional modelling of synthetic living systems within the Amsterdam Center for Dynamics and Computation. We are an inclusive, interdisciplinary group, and diversity and internationalism is at the heart of our research principles, as well as our teaching practice. At the origin of life, chemical reaction networks of prebiotic compounds played an essential role. These networks likely began relatively simple but grew in complexity over time, forming dynamic molecular structures capable of essential functions of life such as self-replication, metabolism, and compartmentalization. Our understanding of how these functions emerged from prebiotic building blocks and their reactivity in different environmental conditions is only starting to unfold.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human-Robot-Bonding
Summary of PhD Program:
The overarching aim of the ERC-project ROBOT-BOND is to develop and empirically validate a new theory on Human-Robot-Bonding for longer term interactions focusing on various target groups. The different target groups include children, adolescents, students, and adults. Social robots are being developed to assist professionals in areas in healthcare and education, where they face serious shortages in human personnel. Our project focuses specifically on developing scenarios to provide support for those who need a little extra in the social and communicative realm. Establishing some form of a bond between the human user and a robot is seen as essential to effectively use a social robot over longer time.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in applied topology
Summary of PhD Program:
The origin of life remains one of the greatest mysteries in science. While many theories have been proposed, no single explanation has yet gained universal agreement. That’s where the PRELIFE consortium comes in. PRELIFE unites experts across a wide range of disciplines from astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, earth and planetary sciences, education, mathematics, to physics. Together we will explore two fundamental questions: How did life emerge on Earth, and how common are the conditions elsewhere in the universe?
