1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Data Diversity for Fair and Robust NLP (DataDivers project)
Summary of PhD Program:
You will develop innovative methods to measure the diversity of NLP datasets. A major focus will be on measuring the dataset diversity from a sociolinguistic perspective, considering language variation – such as styles and dialects – and combining (socio)linguistic insights with neural language modelling. You will also draw from relevant disciplines, particularly the social sciences, that have developed measurement approaches for diversity. Furthermore, you will carry out experiments to assess the impact of data diversity on NLP models, with a focus on fairness and robustness, and investigate ways to leverage data diversity to improve NLP models!
Application Deadline: 5 January 2025
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Empowering regenerative agriculture
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD research project is part of ReGeNL, a transition programme for Dutch agriculture to become based on regenerative practices. It is a transdisciplinary program in which, together with food system actors, we will actively shape the transition and develop solutions required to spur concrete action. This not only involves technical and agronomic solutions, but also social innovations, new revenue models based on social and environmental value creation and new forms of cooperation throughout the value chain from farm to fork. Within ReGeNL, Utrecht University particularly focuses on these socio-economic aspects of the transition.
Application Deadline: 20 December 2024

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microbiome-Driven Crop Nutrition
Summary of PhD Program:
With the pressing need to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers, this PhD project explores the microbial interplay between sulfur and nitrogen metabolism in crops like soybean. By utilising advanced metagenomics, transcriptomics, and elemental analysis, the project aims to identify plant-microbe regulatory networks that enhance crop nutrition and resilience. Benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, interdisciplinary collaborations, and a vibrant scientific community at Utrecht University.
Application Deadline: 15 January 2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Debris Flow – Vegetation Interactions
Summary of PhD Program:
Debris flows are fast-moving landslides that can devastate people and property. In many regions they interact strongly with vegetation, but how this reduces their hazardous impact is surprisingly poorly understood. This critically limits the design of protection forests, as well as anticipation of effects of climate change, wildfires, and deforestation on debris-flow hazards. We currently lack tools to systematically and quantitatively study these interactions. Here we will develop new experimental techniques, wherein we mimic vegetation with small-scale 3D-printed trees and live seedlings, which design will be based on field data.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Marketing and Consumer Behaviour: Technostress and Emerging Technologies
Summary of PhD Program:
The focus of your research will be on understanding how new technologies (e.g., genAI) affect technostress and coping mechanisms and how that influences user decision-making and behaviour. You will be addressing technostress in business to consumer as well as business to business applications. You will investigate key stressors such as interface complexity and content overload and explore proactive (e.g., onboarding tutorials) and reactive (e.g., troubleshooting support) coping mechanisms.
Application Deadline: 8 January 2025
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in ERC research project RESPIRE
Summary of PhD Program:
The RESPIRE project focuses on how planet Earth breathes and suffocates at the current socio-political-environmental conjuncture. Breathing and suffocation are understood not as metaphors but as material processes of contemporary multispecies living and dying on this planet. RESPIRE explores their political dimensions by examining how power relations, climate change, and socio-environmental injustices are interconnected through the practice of planetary breathing. By addressing “planetary lungs” such as forests, oceans, and soil, RESPIRE investigates the crises of deforestation, oceanic dead zones, and peatland destruction as forms of multispecies breathing and suffocation.
Application Deadline: 19 January 2025
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human-Centred AI in Education
Summary of PhD Program:
In this PhD project, you will contribute to tackling the transparency and control challenges above. Specifically, you will co-design explanation and control interfaces with educational stakeholders in human-centred design processes and evaluate these interfaces in lab or real classroom settings using a broad range of measurements (e.g., model understanding, trust, learning, motivation, reliance). As this is an inherently multidisciplinary project, you will combine technical skills (e.g., data science, algorithm-centred explainable AI, training AI models), design skills (e.g., visualisation, front-end development), human-centred skills (e.g., conducting user studies, human-centred explainable AI), and education-specific skills (e.g., assessment design, applying educational frameworks).

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematics of Spatial Networks
Summary of PhD Program:
Many of the standard equations in mathematical physics are based on the fundamental assumption that matter is continuous. In this project, we will revisit such equations by dropping this continuum assumption. We will consider spatial networks – random graph-like structures that permeate space – as the basis and attempt to describe commonly used notions in physics, such as diffusion and elastic deformation, as limiting processes on these structures.
