1. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI-Driven Battery Disassembly

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate with enthusiasm to learn about state-of-the-art developments in statistical machine learning and reinforcement learning, a technology which has powered many of the recent groundbreaking self-guided game engines and large language models. Together we will study how the existing and emerging paradigms in reinforcement learning can be utilized to power robotics systems in autonomously optimizing the battery disassembly process from sensor feedback.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Elucidating the role of lipids in fibrotic capsule formation at the surface of implanted medical devices

Summary of PhD Program:

Implanted medical devices are crucial in healthcare, valued at around £400 billion globally, however there is a high failure rate, often due to the foreign body reaction, where a fibrotic capsule forms around the implant with associated inflammation, loosening and infection. Currently the methods to combat foreign body reaction focus on preventing protein buildup to avoid immune activation, but this hasn’t successfully prevented capsule formation in the clinic.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating the role of immunity, behaviour and climate in driving seasonal influenza dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project we will explore the potential to use Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) to identify the parameters of seasonal influenza transmission models in a variety of geographical regions, using commonly available microbiological and epidemiological surveillance data. We will first consider how details of the model structure and ABC implementation influence the posterior estimation and its computational cost, informing the utility of such modelling to guide public health policy in different settings.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Controlling Clostridioides difficile infections through phage therapy

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD’s goal is to capitalize on these breakthroughs in phage isolation and characterization through the design, build and test of synthetic bacteriophage cocktails effective against those dominant C. diff strains responsible for CDI. Two ‘platforms’ will be pursued: (i) a lytic platform based on our newly isolated phage, and; (ii) a lysogenic platform incorporating elements designed to kill the host upon lysogeny. The project will involve anaerobic microbiology, DNA synthesis, cloning, synthetic biology, CRISPR/Cas genome editing, electron/high resolution microscopy, bioinformatics, in vivo testing, receptor biology, therapeutics and biochemistry.

Application Deadline: 31 March 2024

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in 3D printing of low dimensional materials for sensing

Summary of PhD Program:

We seek to use 3D printing to create novel multimaterial functional structures capable of new ways of sensing underlying material properties. We will use low dimensional materials, including graphene, perovskites and nanodiamonds incorporated into polymers, ceramics and glasses and we will use 3D printing to form them into geometrically complex structures. We will explore how low dimensional materials behave when included within a 3D printed matrix, and we will use their functionality to design and create sensors that can be used for, e.g., examining tissue health or failure in structures under load.

Application Deadline: 31 May 2024

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ultra-thin opto-acoustic fibre optic probe for cancer characterisation

Summary of PhD Program:

Develop an ultra-thin, bio-compatible, fibre optic ultrasound instrument and a model to predict the mechanical properties of soft matter. This novel device, based on the interaction between acoustic interface waves with the sample will provide mechanical property information across a range of length scales allowing measurements on cells through to tissue. The devices will be compatible with fibre optic delivery and proof of concept experiments in vitro on micro-tumours will be demonstrated, paving the way for development of currently unmet clinical applications.
