Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.
Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.
1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Particle Physics
Summary of PhD Program:
The positions are opened in the HIP CMS experiment group, which contributes to the analysis of data from the CERN CMS experiment, calibration, and the development of analysis tools and software. Our key focus areas are the physics of jets, top quarks, and EWSB, including the development of novel machine-learning methods for high-energy physics. Our experimental responsibilities include trigger algorithms and performance, detector calibration, and jet energy corrections.
Application Deadline: 31.8.2025
2. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Future Forests
Summary of PhD Program:
You will now have a chance to address these issues in a four year “Future Forests” research project, funded by Jane and Aatos Erkko foundation. You will use Finland-wide remote sensing resources from one of the consortium members, Finnish Geospatial Research Institute to monitor tree growth in Finland and combine this information with whole genome sequencing data from up to 10,000 trees. We are using birches (Betula) as our model organism, as they have a relatively small genome, they are adapted to their local environments and there are accelerated breeding procedures for testing hypotheses arising from the analyses.
Application Deadline: 25.8.2025

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in cell and molecular biology, Vartiainen group
Summary of PhD Program:
A Postdoctoral and/or Doctoral Researcher position is available in the lab of Dr. Maria Vartiainen at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki, Finland. We are seeking a motivated researcher to join our team in the field of cell and molecular biology. By combining advanced imaging techniques with functional genomics, we study how actin operates in the nucleus to regulate nuclear organization and consequently nuclear processes. The successful candidate(s) will focus on the mechanisms by which actin regulates the activity of specific transcription factors using cell biological and sequencing-based (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN, PROseq) techniques.
Application Deadline: 15.08.2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Algorithms and Computational Biology
Summary of PhD Program:
The successful candidate will work within the research project “Structural correctness in metagenomics assembly” funded by the Research Council of Finland in the research group of University Lecturer Leena Salmela. We develop models, algorithms and data structures for high throughput sequencing data with a main emphasis on genome assembly. The research group is part of the Algorithmic Bioinformatics lab at University of Helsinki.
Application Deadline: 15.08.2025

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Atmospheric Sciences / Environmental Sciences
Summary of PhD Program:
Northern wetlands emit large amounts of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas. There are high uncertainties in the estimation of wetland CH4 emissions due to the large temporal and spatial variations in CH4 emission and its underlying processes. The lack of continuous observations of CH4 turnover hinders our understanding of CH4 emission variability and the predictability of mechanistic CH4 models. We aim to fill the knowledge gap in the project “A holistic view of Methane turnover in northern Wetlands by Novel isotopic approach (MeWeN): Coupled above/belowground automatic measuring and isotope labelling”.
Application Deadline: 15.8.2025
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Autoimmune Neurology
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for an ambitious researcher with a PhD / MSc, a solid publication record, and strong background in wet lab work within the field of immunology. Primary human B cell culture skills, gene editing with crispr-cas9 along with human immune cell isolation and flow cytometry techniques are of special value. Applicants should be comfortable working both independently and as part of an inter-disciplinary team, where strong communication skills in English are needed. A foundational understanding and interest in immunology and neurology fields is important.
Application Deadline: 31.7.2025
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biogeochemistry and Environmental Sciences
Summary of PhD Program:
In the MeWeN project, we will conduct in-situ surface and subsurface measurement of and laboratory measurements (continuous and campaign based) as well as process-based CH4 isotope modelling. We will measure or infer methane-related processes, fluxes, microbial composition, vegetation, and key environmental variables from different wetland types at a high temporal resolution. The comprehensive dataset will provide us with detailed information on CH4 turnover dynamics and responses to biotic and abiotic factors along the year, especially during the less studied winter and shoulder seasons.
