Are you holding Master’s degree and looking for fully funded PhD positions? University of Helsinki, Finland invites online application for multiple funded PhD Programs / fully funded PhD positions in various research areas.

Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bacterial Temperature Adaptation and Super-Resolution Microscopy

Summary of PhD Program:

Most microorganisms lack homeothermic regulation which subjects them to unpredictable fluctuations in environmental temperature. Yet many microorganisms can withstand severe environmental changes and grow across large temperature ranges while maintaining cellular homeostasis and sub-cellular organization. The project will aim at understanding how temperature affects the cytoplasmic state in bacteria and what the consequences to cellular processes are. To study this, we use state-of-the-art super-resolution microscopy and single molecule tracking to record the movement of individual molecules inside individual live cells. Single molecule dynamics reports on the molecular interactions in real-time, acting as a probe for changes in the cellular environment.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Urban evolutionary ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD researcher will participate in a project studying the adaptive benefits of urban evolution in a common butterfly, Pieris napi (Green-veined White, Lanttuperhonen). We will test whether previously identified evolution of this species in Helsinki provides an adaptive benefit by raising offspring of both urban and rural butterflies in outdoor cages in both locations. To conduct these experiments, we will work with local schools (grades 5 and 6) in Helsinki and the surrounding rural areas, involving students directly in planning and conducting the experiments. This will allow the project to also grant new insights for science education and for the role of young people in science.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Context-awareness for generative AI

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of the research is to model the user’s context from data (behavior, conversations, physiology) for personalising generative AI applications such as an LLMs chatbot. We previously modeled user’s context to improve recommender systems (Jacucci et al. 2021) by computer screen monitoring. The new research will use in addition a variety of sensors to capture the physical world interactions in addition to the digital context and allow generative AI applications to access information of the current or past context of users.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Systems Immunometabolism Lab

Summary of PhD Program:

The Chen’s research group at University of Helsinki is seeking a motivated doctoral researcher to contribute to a core project funded by the Academy of Finland. The project aims to investigate the role of RNA splicing and tissue environment in shaping human macrophage diverse phenotypes during obesity. In this study, we will use cutting-edge single-cell and spatial omics technologies, develop novel computational methods, perform multimodal data analysis and integration, and experimental validation to uncover key factors steering the progression of obesity-associated metabolic disorders. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in computational data analysis and method development. Individuals with a strong interest and background in computational biology/bioinformatics are strongly encouraged to consider this opportunity.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

The Doctoral Researcher will work on a project funded by the Academy of Finland. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR). The project aims to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data science methods to automate the data processing and analysis of big atmospheric and environmental data, mainly generated via the Stations for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR stations) and other related research infrastructure, such as ACTRIS, etc. The developed methods will be deployed in various platforms, such as computing clusters operated by CSC – IT Center for Science (CSC).

6. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

The Doctoral Researcher will work on a project funded by the Academy of Finland. The project aims to develop data science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based methods to identify and analyze anomalous and drifted data from atmospheric and environmental measurements. Automatic methods will then detect, isolate, and identify the drifted data and/or the faults in scientific instruments. The main goals are to ensure high data quality generation, increase the quality of instrument diagnostics, minimize measurement downtime (I.e., minimize missing data), and reduce engineer workloads in maintaining continuous measurements. The project mainly uses data sets generated from several field campaigns and big data sets generated via the Stations for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR stations) and other related research infrastructure, such as ACTRIS, etc.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in functional 2d nanomaterials

Summary of PhD Program:

The student will focus on creating novel functional nanomaterials and two dimensional (2D) structures by employing ion implantation and ion irradiation. The student will join the project “Metal atoms on functional nanoplatforms” funded by the Research Council of Finland at the University of Helsinki. The project studies engineering of 2D nanomaterials and looks at the incorporation, properties and application of individual metal dopants in 2D transition metal dichalcogenide sheets. These layered materials act as functional nanoplatforms with versatile use in many fields from quantum optics to nanocatalysis.
