1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Towards decolonising AI safety research – A state of the art analysis of the AI cyber risks to citizens’ digital rights in the Global South

Summary of PhD Program:

The project aims to analyse the dispossession of citizens of the Global South of their digital rights (security, privacy, intellectual property, identity, and data sovereignty) and the inadequacy of contemporary cyber security research for these rights. This analysis will be done in the context of AI alignment and the current and potential risks of AI, and intersecting systems of modern-coloniality, globalised neoliberal economies, and authoritarianism.

Application Deadline: 7th January 2025

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in The Influence of External Forces on Dendritic Deformation during Solidification

Summary of PhD Program:

This 4-year PhD study aims to investigate how external forces (e.g. electromagnetic, hydrodynamic, ultrasonic, gravitational) influence deformation of dendrites concurrently with solidification. The PhD will primarily be computational, utilising state-of-the-art numerical techniques and high-performance computing to predict deformation behaviour, but also examine unknown material properties such as the Young’s modulus of individual dendrites close to their liquidus temperature.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Imaging-based AI models for tissue mechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

The project will benefit from a unique InCiTe 3D X-ray microscope (KA Imaging) capable of sub-micron resolution and fast phase-contrast (first and only technology of this type in UK/Europe), including in situ mechanics and dedicated software/solutions (e.g. AI-DVC) available at the Centre for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (CAMM) as well as the Centre for Advanced Simulation and Modelling (CASM).

Application Deadline: 3rd January 2025

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Full Quantum Computer for AI Applications

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this project is to explore a quantum approach of a new abstraction for computing that models the functionality of the human brain e.g. for AI applications. So far, this abstraction has been demonstrated successfully within an electronic and optical context where it was shown to make use of the complete spectrum of the technology (rather than a limited 0/1 abstraction) and we would now like to test and demonstrate the full quantum ability of this idea.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Endohedral fullerenes for portable atomic clocks: molecules carrying time

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, we shall synthesise endohedral fullerenes such as N@C60 and metallic endohedral fullerenes (metallofullerenes) using state-of-theart production facilities including an ion implantation reactor and an arcdischarge reactor. We shall purify these molecules using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and we shall characterize them spectroscopically using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and other methodologies. Hence, the PhD student working on the project, will acquire significant skills in the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials and will be trained in state-of-the-art techniques that can be found in only a handful of laboratories worldwide.

Application Deadline: 31st December 2024

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Corneal Material Characterisation Using Digital Volume Correlation

Summary of PhD Program:

The research will involve designing a novel in situ experimental setup for the recently acquired inCiTe 3D X-ray microscope and implementation of DVC algorithms to analyse the deformation of the cornea under various loading conditions. This will enable inverse Finite Element (FE) analysis to extract the material properties of the cornea based on the deformation data obtained from DVC, developing a constitutive model that accurately represents the corneal biomechanics. The project is mainly designed to offer a comprehensive and enriching research experience for the potential student, combining hands-on experimentation, exposure to advanced imaging technologies, interdisciplinary training, and opportunities for professional development.

Application Deadline: 16th February 2025

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Characterization of macromolecular complex mixtures

Summary of PhD Program:

The project will critically evaluate NMR techniques – diffusion, electrophoretic and relaxation NMR – but in its early stage, will not prioritize any specific characterization technique. As the non-desired polymers do not contain any chromophore and are of similar composition to the desired ones, the technique of choice must detect all polymer populations. The project is co-funded with Syngenta and will involve regular reporting to Syngenta colleagues. A period of work placement within Syngenta is anticipated, timed to yield most benefit to the project.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Autogenous diagenesis of limestone waste

Summary of PhD Program:

Diagenesis refers to the physical, chemical and biological processes that ‘turn’ sediments into rock (1,2). As sediments become buried by natural processes, they are subject to overburden pressure and raised temperatures, albeit lower than those that cause metamorphism (2,3). Diagenesis takes place over geological timescales and the rocks formed are used in industrial applications that range from cement and tile production to cladding and dimension stone.
