1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Leveraging Genomic Technologies to Investigate the Molecular Basis of Sea Lice Resistance

Summary of PhD Program:

Sea lice increasingly threaten wild and farmed salmonid populations around the world, leading to substantial animal welfare concerns and economic losses. These ectoparasites feed on the skin of their fish hosts, causing physiological stress and increasing susceptibility to secondary infections. The Atlantic Salmon aquaculture industry spends hundreds of millions of pounds (£) globally each year on treatments, yet costs are expected to continue rising due to climate change-driven increases in sea lice abundance and the ongoing evolution of resistance within sea lice populations to existing treatments. A shift from reactive treatments to proactive strategies—such as enhancing salmonids’ innate immunity to sea lice—may offer a more sustainable solution. However, the mechanisms underlying sea lice resistance remain largely unknown.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational and ML Modelling of Low Temperature Plasmas

Summary of PhD Program:

The University of Exeter and Oxford Instruments Plasma Technologies are offering a jointly funded PhD position in computational and machine learning modelling of low temperature plasmas. Oxford Instruments (OI) develops and markets a range of manufacturing and scientific equipment using low temperature plasmas for etching and deposition. Plasma is a complex state of matter which can be considered as a fluid or as individual particles; moreover, complex chemical reactions can occur between species in the plasma. Modelling a plasma is accordingly a very complex and challenging task.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Submesoscales, stirring, and mixing in the southwest Atlantic, Ocean Science

Summary of PhD Program:

How do our oceans flow deep below the surface-layers? This PhD project is aimed at better understanding the generation and roll of sub-surface currents that span scales of tens of metres to tens of kilometers, otherwise known as submesoscale currents. Submesoscale flows matter because they provide a pathway to harness energy from the winds and tides, using it to stir and mix different water masses around the globe, along with the properties that they carry. However, these currents are profoundly under-sampled by observations and poorly represented in models. One global hotspot of submesoscale ocean activity is thought to be the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC) located off the coast of Argentina and Uruguay.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Clearing the waters: exploring the causes of poor water quality and its effects on ecology in the Thames catchment

Summary of PhD Program:

As the second longest river in the UK, flowing through the country’s capital city out to the North Sea, the Thames River and Estuary is exposed to many pressures along its path. It is the busiest inland waterway, surrounded by large developments including homes for over 15 million people, two large container ports, struggling sewage infrastructure, major road networks and impacts from agriculture. Despite this, the Thames catchment is a nursery ground for many commercial fish species and home to iconic species including water voles, otters, kingfishers, eels, seahorses, sharks and seals. These species exist due to the many and varied Thames habitats, with reed beds, freshwater wetlands, seagrass meadows, saltmarsh and native oyster reef, found along its length.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Generative AI: Effective Training and Inference of Generative Models

Summary of PhD Program:

Generative machine learning models have made significant progress in recent years. Typical examples include, for example, high-quality image or video generation using diffusion models (e.g., StableDiffusion) and large language models (LLMs) based on the transformer architecture [6] (e.g., ChatGPT). In general, the above generative models need considerable amount of computational resources in terms of GPUs and/or time in either training or inference procedures, which pose considerable challenges to both academia and industry for widespread access and deployment.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Decision-Making under Uncertainty: The Priority Elicitation Problem

Summary of PhD Program:

The research project aims to explore techniques that could facilitate experts in the elicitation of priorities. One possible direction could be to use the technique of Inverse Reinforcement Learning (IRL) [2], [3]. IRL is an AI-based technique that supports imitation of the preferred system behaviour by using its behavioural history. It helps in the inference of the reward values by taking the observed history of policies as input. As the priorities are represented as utilities based on the multiple rewards [4].[5]; techniques like IRL could infer these reward values and support the experts with the elicitation process.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Verifying Human-GenAI Alignment via Statistical Methods

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to establish provable guarantees for Human-GenAI-Alignment by integrating statistical methods with adversarial methods. For example, by leveraging PAC methods and conformal prediction, we can develop probabilistic guarantees that quantify uncertainty in human preference alignment while ensuring robustness against adversarial conditions. The ability to mathematically verify AI alignment has profound implications. Consider a healthcare assistant system designed to provide medical guidance. If such a system generates misleading or biased advice, the consequences could be severe. Just as safety-critical industries adhere to rigorous reliability standards, the assistant system should be held to quantifiable human-alignment guarantees.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sustainable materials for wearable electronic textiles

Summary of PhD Program:

Multifunctional e-textiles offer a transformative solution with added electrical, thermal, and optical functionalities to interface with the human body, enabling continuous monitoring, collection, and communication of physiological parameters. However, one of the major challenges remains in area of material sustainability. This PhD project is designed to develop sustainable conductive inks that can be inkjet-printed onto biodegradable textile substrate. This whole system will be designed in a fashion that they can easily be disintegrated, recycled or degraded into non-toxic organic molecules in certain conditions at the end of their life.
