1. Fully Funded PhD Position in fundamental turbulence

Summary of PhD Program:

Turbulence is ubiquitous in nature and technology. Yet, developing theories of turbulence, which ultimately all modeling applications rely on, remains an outstanding scientific challenge. The goal of the EU-funded project UniTED is to combine theory and new computational approaches to tackle this long-standing problem and enhance our fundamental understanding of highly turbulent flows.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biological Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The research group Biological Physics engages in fundamental and applied research questions in the field of experimental cellular biophysics. In the focus of our research are mechanical cellular processes such as the interaction between microparticles and cells. To enable our research, we are developing and using quantitative tools such as magnetic tweezers, optical tweezers and microfluidics in combination with high temporal and spatial resolution light microscopy. In addition, we are using and developing methods for digital image processing and computer simulations.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Process Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

High-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC) are promising for sustainable energy supply. In contrast to conventional fuel cells, they show a higher tolerance to fuel impurities and a simpler water management. This makes them particularly interesting for use in hot climates and high-power applications such as trucks and ships. Liquid phosphoric acid immobilised in polybenzimidazole membranes serves as a proton conductor. The wetting of the electrode by the phosphoric acid results in the formation of the so-called three-phase boundary between the phosphoric acid (proton transport), the supplied reaction gases (molecular transport) and the platinum catalyst (electron transport). This effectively links several transport phenomena that need to be better understood within the framework of the project.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Systems Engineering for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Summary of PhD Program:

The position is available immediately. The Chair of Systems Engineering of Electrical Storage has been founded recently and is a member of the newly established Bavarian Center for Battery Technology (BayBatt). The research focuses on the optimal design and layout of battery storage systems from the cell upwards. Key parameters such as power and energy density as well as system properties such as safety and reliability only emerge from the interaction of the subsystems cell, mechanical structure, thermal management, electronics and software. Due to its integrative character, the chair represents the bridge from the components researched at other chairs at BayBatt to the application of the battery system.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Soil Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

Soils are dynamic systems and soil physical properties are constantly changing in time and in space. For example, the temporal variation of soil hydraulic properties affects water dynamics, such as evaporation/transpiration fluxes, groundwater recharge and solute transport and leaching. However, these changes are not well understood, and they are not included in our theoretical concepts. We hypothesize that incorporating the temporal changes of soil hydraulic properties into state-of-the-art hydrological models will improve prediction of water dynamics, especially in the prospect of a changing climate.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in engineering and bioprinting of diaphragm muscle tissue

Summary of PhD Program:

The projects aim to develop an in vitro model for a diaphragm using 3D bioprinting, and composite fibrous materials. The project is highly interdisciplinary and requires collaboration with researchers from engineering, medicine, and chemistry. The application-oriented research will be performed in laboratories located at the Department of Biomaterials at the University of Bayreuth. Furthermore, this interdisciplinary project will be performed in close collaboration with muscle and tendon biologists in Austria and Italy as well as biomechanics experts towards characterizing and tuning the mechanical properties of tissue-engineered constructs.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Forest Biogeochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The project is part of a long-term and large-scale deadwood experiment (BELongDead) within the Biodiversity Exploratories. In this experiment, functions and process rates of lying deadwood of 13 tree species have been studied at 30 forest sites in three regions in Germany for more than 14 years. This project focusses on the production and traits of humus from decomposing deadwood which is considered as potential source of carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems. It combines field observations, chemical and spectral analyses and microbial processes to assess the quality, stability and functions of tree species specific deadwood humus. Stable isotopes (13C, 15N, 18O) will be applied to quantify microbial process rates including microbial growth, turnover, carbon use efficiency, respiration and nitrogen fixation. In cooperation with project partners, the relationship between chemical-microbial traits and microbial communities of deadwood humus is being investigated.
